14. Jefferson Davis HALE
(108) was born on May 12 1862.
(109) He died on Jan 7 1943 in Henry Co.
IN.(110) He was buried in Cadiz IN.
-Described as "tall and good-looking."
-Had 2 wives, 17 children.
-In telephone conversation with "Gene" (Lula Bell) Peavler Ivone on
Sep. 24, 1995, she stated that her grandfather, Jeff Hale, had told her that
his (Jeff's) grandfather or great-grandfather had married an Indian woman [probably
Cherokee, perhaps the daughter of Spanish/Cherokee (Melungeon?) parents]. He
was married to Mary F. WARREN on May 4 1882 in Washington Co. KY.
(111) -Married by David Bruner @ Enoch Warren's home; witnessed by
Butler
Shewmaker and Wm. M. Bruner. He was divorced from Mary F. WARREN in 1883. After
her divorce from Jeff, Mary went to Mountain View MO and
remarried twice.
15. Mary F.
WARREN(112)
(113)(114)
(115) was born about 1866 in Washington Co. KY.
(116) She died about 1917 in Mountain View MO.
(117) -1880 Wash.Co. KY census shows Mary's age as "14."
-In a telephone conversation with "Gene" (Lula Bell) Peavler Ivone
on Sep. 24, 1995, she related to me that Mary Warren had left Jefferson Davis
Hale in 1882/3 and gone off to Missouri (to a town now called "Mountain
View"), after which a divorce was obtained. Bertha Hale was raised by Nancy
Jane Sallee Hale, her grandmother.
-Gene Ivone stated on Aug 21, 1996 in Burnside MN that Mary Warren had a dark
complexion and was descended from the "Black Dutch."
-Arlene Hale Brachman states that her Uncle Bob [Robert Cecil Hale] told her
that Mary Warren had only one thumb, whether from birth defect or accident is
unknown. This, however, is disputed by Gene Ivone, who stated on Dec 31, 1995,
in a phone conversation with CB Coslow, that she last saw Mary when she (Gene)
was about 10 years old; she believes that she would recall anything that unusual
-- also that it would have been a subject of family conversation.
-Gene Ivone also stated during the above 12/31/1995 phone conversation that Mary
had two husbands after divorcing Jeff Hale. She came back on a visit with No.
3 (a Hickerson) and stayed all winter with Bertha and Jim Peavler. Hickerson
was something of a scoundrel, and "Honest Jim" chased him off to Rose
Hill (in western Mercer Co. KY). Gene stated in Burnside MN on 8/19/1996 that
Mary and Hickerson had 8 or 9 children, one named "Ben."
-Gene Ivone further stated during the phone conversation that Mary had said her
one last wish was to go back and visit Nancy before she died. She did make such
a trip, by train. During her visit, she became ill and returned to Mountain View,
again by train. She died 3 days later of pneumonia.
Note: A "Mountain View MO" was at one time changed to "Fristoe
MO." Same??
Note: Mary F. Warren may have been "Mary Jane" -- Phillip Gene Peavler
has Jeff Hale's first wife listed as "Jane Hickerson." Children were:
7 i.
Bertha Jane HALE.
