32. Joseph Jackson "Jack" COSTLOW
(199)(200)
died before 1870.(201) He was
born in NC.(202)
(203) -Ky Mortality Schelules (Sanders compilation, p.52) say he was
born in Washington Co.
-1840 Washington Co. KY census has Jackson Costlow as 20-30 yrs old, with a wife
in same age range, and a son under 5. (Seems too young for Joseph Jackson, but
would fit his son, Joel W. Costlow.) No other Wash. Co. census information 1810-1840
on Coslows.
-1850 census has son Marion, age 12, in the residence of his brother Joel W.,
so Joseph Jackson might have/probably died before the census.
33. Celia was born about 1820 in Washington Co. KY. Children were:
16 i.
Joel W. "Joseph" "Joe" COSTLOW.

KY. -Brief account in Faye Sea Sander's book on Leonard Seay, Sr. and his descendants.
Marion apparently in a politically-oriented lynching party which went to lynch
Joe Richardson. Joe killed Marion and broke up the party; then he beat up and
hung John and Bill Gibson on Three Lick Creek (near Washington-Mercer county
line], after which they were laid out on the road in front of Ellis Vorhies'
house. Joe took his family to Indiana and never returned; some of his descendants
living in Denver CO in 1984. -With Joel Joseph Costlow in 1850 Wash. Co. census.
-Reportedly, the #1 man in the Ku Klux Klan in Harrodsburg following the Civil
War was Isaiah Gabhart. The #2 man was Marion Coslow, and the #3 man was Eugene
H. "Dean" Carey. They headed up a lynch mob who murdered, among others
-- John Divine (a Union soldier), Nathaniel Lawson Sr. (a Republican), John Divine's
brother (Patterson), and John Divine's cousins John and William Gibson. They
usually did this at night, rousting their victims out of bed, allowing them to
start to run, shooting them in the back, then dragging them to a nearby tree
(often in their own front yards) and hanging them. The terrified families of
these victims were ordered not to take their loved ones down until morning, and
they usually complied. There's even a tree in Cornishville, Mercer Co. Ky. called
the "Hanging Tree," because this gang used it so often. (Pam Carey
Durstock, Carey database, KyGenWeb, Mercer Co. Homepage)
-from the book ANNALS OF KENTUCKY -page 180 - entry dated
June 3, 1867-----John Devine shot, and then hung, by "regulators,"
at the house of Wm.
Carey, six miles from Harrodsburg, Mercer Co. ------
Note: Marion's brother William was in the Paris Shewmaker/Rachel Lawson household
in the 1850 Wash. Co. KY household. Rachel was a daughter of Nathaniel Lawson
Sr.
