by Rev. Milbourn. See JDB, Sallees, p. 217 note. -"Rev. David Bruner, one
of the oldest and perhaps one of the widest known men in the county, died at
his home in this city Monday morning. He was 95 years of age, and had been a
minister of the Baptist church since he was 20. He began the study of ministry
when a lad in years, and has held services all over this and adjoining counties.
For more than fifty years he was the most prominent devine in the West End,
and in his long and Godly life he has married over 4,000 couples and baptized
and buried equally as many. He was a man whose feet were always willing to go
at the call of distress; whose hands were always ready to minister unto 'the
least of these, my brethren.' Many sick beds he has eased, and many souls speeded
well on that last long journey, which he himself has now taken. Few men have
left behind such a record of a life well spent, so nobly and so unselfishly.
He had three sons in the Federal army, one of whom died in prison, and several
years ago the Government gave him about $3,500 back pay, and a pension for this
son's life. Such financial help at the time when he had grown too feeble to
preach, eased and comforted his last days. 'Uncle Davy,' he was lovingly called
by all who knew him, and many have felt that with his going out they have lost
a true and devoted friend, whose counsel was always given wisely and affectionately.
The funeral services were held by Rev. Sommers, of Georgetown, and the remains
were interred in the family burying ground in the West End of the county. (Harrodsburg
Herald, Thursday, April 19, 1906)
