248. James BAKER Sr. was born about 1766 in Halifax Co. VA.⁽¹⁰⁴⁵⁾ He was elected/appointed Court Clerk, Halifax Co. VA before 1784. ⁽¹⁰⁴⁶⁾ He Moved to: Lincoln (now Garrard) Co. KY in 1784. Lived on Sugar Creek per Edith Baker Kaspar (ltr to Barbara Hendrickson, Oct 1956). He died before 1845 in Mercer Co. KY. ⁽¹⁰⁴⁷⁾ -James, with his father, Martin, and cousin Francis Clark, came to Garrard Co. KY from VA about 1779. They were gone so long that Martin was declared dead in VA and his estate settled. They returned to VA to pick up the family (Ann Hannah, James, and Elizabeth) in 1784.
-Possibly md Johanna Brag(g) in May 1788, Christ Church Parish VA (E.A. Kaspar).
-James had 8 children. A 1993 Researchers publication, "Garrard County Kentucky Records #1 Wills 1796 - 1833 and Potpourri" also attributes the following additional children to James and Elizabeth: Allen, b.1788; John, b.1790 (not John Reuben who md in 1803); Bingin, b.1796; David, b.1796; Hiram, b.1799; and Bassel, b.1806. To date, no source documentation has been identified for these purported children.
-James supposedly left a will in Anderson Co. leaving everything to Jenny. [E.A. Kaspar e-mail 8/13/1999]. He was divorced from Elizabeth FUQUA in Jun 1836. ⁽¹⁰⁴⁸⁾ Elizabeth was said to have been unfaithful, and left the state.

i. John Reuben BAKER. -Parents questionable. (Jo Anne Ernst had Lewis Baker as John Reuben and Patsy Littrel Baker's son, and John Reuben Baker as coming from NC, parentage unknown.)

iii. Susannah BAKER was born in 1791.⁽¹⁰⁴⁹⁾ She died before 1845.⁽¹⁰⁵⁰⁾ Susannah had 2 children by Henry Taylor, also had children by John Huffman.
iv. Henrietta Maria BAKER⁽¹⁰⁵¹⁾ was born in 1793.⁽¹⁰⁵²⁾ She died on Mar 31 1839 in Owen Co. IN.⁽¹⁰⁵³⁾ She Moved to: Putnam Co. IN. Henrietta and William had 10 children in Putnam Co. IN; all lived and died there except for a daughter who died in IA.
v. Sallie BAKER was born in 1795.⁽¹⁰⁵⁴⁾ Camlin?
vi. Henry BAKER was born in 1796.⁽¹⁰⁵⁵⁾ He served in the military in 1813 in U.S. Army. ⁽¹⁰⁵⁶⁾ Private; killed in action. He died on Nov 15 1813 in War of 1812.⁽¹⁰⁵⁷⁾ Garrard Co. KY, Order Book B, pp.121, 123, Oct 1816, re administration of Henry's estate.
vii. Martin BAKER^{(1058) (745)(1059)} was born on Nov 11 1796 in Lancaster KY.⁽¹⁰⁶⁰⁾ He was living in 1830 in Mercer Co. KY.⁽¹⁰⁶¹⁾ Operated a mill on the Kentucky River near Shakertown. He Moved to: Grundy Co. MO in 1849.⁽¹⁰⁶²⁾ From Mercer Co. KY. He died on Mar 7 1875 in Trenton MO.^{(1063) (1064)} He was buried in Brooks Cemetery, Grundy Co. MO. -Located on John Brooks' farm, Route M, Grundy Co. MO. -Sold his 143-acre farm in Mercer Co. Ky to Abraham Smith for $3,578.12 on 9/15/1849.

x. Thomas "Tomie" BAKER was born about 1803 in KY. ⁽¹⁰⁶⁶⁾ He died about Mar 1905 in Mercer Co. KY. ⁽¹⁰⁶⁷⁾ -Came from VA to Mercer Co. KY "on the river where they ran a mill which was flooded by the TVA" [must refer to Herrington Lake on the Dix River?]
-He reportedly married 3 or 4 times with children from 2 of the marriages.
xi. Catherine BAKER⁽¹⁰⁶⁸⁾ was born in 1804.⁽¹⁰⁶⁹⁾ Possible.
