496. Martin BAKER (1298)(1299) was born in 1714. (1300) Not documented. He resided at Halifax Co. VA before 1778. He Moved to: Lincoln (now Garrard) Co. KY between 1784 and 1788.(774) From Fairfax Co. VA; was in KY as early as 1779. He Moved to: KY in 1803/4. (1301) He died in 1820 in Garrard Co. KY. (1302) Garrard Co. estate papers No. 416, lists Martin baker, deceased "Inventory and appraisement." He was buried in Garrard Co. KY. Said to be near Lancaster; family later unable to locate it. -Family reportedly was Scot-Irish and immigrated to America from England. Family tradition says that 3 brothers came from England together sometime in the 1600s.

-Martin left Fairfax Co. VA in 1784; moved to Garrard Co. KY (on Sugar Creek, which was in Lincoln Co. KY at the time).

-Treasury Warrant -- Heirs of Martin Baker, 1,200 acres Lincoln Co., Salt River, surveyed 12-13-1783, granted 3-22-1805.

-Martin sold slaves (Charlotte and her son, Lewis), livestock, and household goods to William Hamlett (his son-in-law) for 186 pounds on 2/15/1787 in Halifax Co. VA; recorded in Garrard Co. KY 12/29/1813 (see Garrard Co. Deed Bk D, p.297).

Re probate of Martin's estate: Garrard Co. Order Bk 17, pp. 184, 202, 217, 220; Garrard Co. Estate Papers No. 416 -- Inventory (Jan 1825): Negro man named Emanuel, bay mare, colt, 5 head of cattle, hogs, 2 sheep, household goods, total value $267.75.

Judge Caleb Wallace's mother was Esther Baker; he was born on Cub Creek in Lunenburg/Charlotte Co. VA, just a few miles from her Baker home. No connection yet established to the Martin Baker family. (fm Anne Baker, Harrodsburg KY)

497. Hannah Anne CLARK (745) died after 1820. -When Martin and Ann came to Kentucky from Virginia, she had an assortment of slaves that had been given to her by Alexander Horsbaugh (not a relative of Henrietta). The original slave was a 7-year old child given to her (not to Martin). Details apparently in Garrard Co. Ky court cases, possibly styled "Horsebaugh v. Baker," "Baker v. Baker," and "Hamlett v. Baker. Children were:

child ii. Elizabeth BAKER(774) was born about 1767.(1303) She died about 1785. (1304) -She died unmarried at age 18.
child iii. Henrietta BAKER was born about 1769 in VA. (1305) She died about 1814.(1306) Henrietta and William left Halifax Co. ca 1790. No trace of her has been found in VA after William's death.
child iv. Susannah BAKER was born about 1755.(1307) She was living in 1840 in Greenbrier VA. She Moved to: Kanawha Co. VA in 1844.(1308) She executed a will on Jun 2 1845 in Kanawha Co. VA.(1309) Widow's Pension W-6742
