# ID: I1032
# Name: Henry I " Beauclerc" NORMANDY
# Given Name: Henry I " Beauclerc"
# Surname: Normandy
# Title: King of England
# Sex: M
# Birth: Sep 1068 in Selby,Yorkshire,England
# Death: 1 Dec 1135 in Lyons-La-Fret,Normandy,France
First Norman king of England, fourth son of William the Conqueror a nd Arletta, a tanner's daughter, sometimes called William the Bastard. O n Sept. 28, 1066 William secured the sanction of Pope Alexander II for a N orman invasion of England. By 1070 the Norman conquest of England was c omplete. William introduced the Continental system of feudalism; by the O ath of Salisbury of 1086 all landlords swore allegiance to William, thu s establishing the precesdent that a vassal's loyalty to the king overr ode his fealty to his immediate lord. Because his father, who died in 1 087, left him no land, Henry made several unsuccessful attempts to gain t erritories on the Continent. On the death of his brother William II in 1 100, Henry took advantage of the absence of another brother Robert, who h ad a prior claim to the throne to seize the royal treasury and have him self crowned king at Westminster. Henry subsequently secured his positi on with the nobles and with the church by issuing a charter of libertie s that acknowledged the feudal rights of the nobles and the rights of t he church. In 1101 Robert, who was duke of Normandy, invaded England, b ut Henry persuaded him to withdraw by promising him a pension and milit ary aid on the Continent. In 1102 Henry put down a revolt of nobles, wh o subsequently took refuge in Normandy, where they were aided by Robert . By defeating Robert at Tinchebray, France, in 1106, Henry won Normand y. During the rest of his reign, however, he constantly had to put down u prisings that threatened his rule in Normandy. The conflict between Hen ry and Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury, over the question of lay inves titure (the appointment of church officials by the king), was settled i n 1107 by a compromise that left the king with substantial control in t he matter.
Because he had no surviving male heir, Henry was forced to designat e his daughter Matilda as his heiress. After his death on December 1, 1 135, at Lyons-la-Fret, Normandy, however, Henry's nephew, Stephen of Bl ois, usurped the throne, plunging the country into a protracted civil w ar that ended only with the accession of Matilda's son, Henry II, in 11 54."Henry I (of England)," Microsoft (R) Encarta. HENRY I "Beauclerc" of Normandy (King of England)
Born: ABT Sep 1068, Selby, Yorkshire, England
Acceded: 6 Aug 1100, Westminster Abbey, London, England
Died: 1 Dec 1135, St Denis-le-Fermont, near Gisors
Buried: Reading Abbey, Berkshire, England
Notes: Reigned 1100-1135. Duke of Normandy 1106-1135. His reign is nota ble for important legal and administrative reforms, and for the final r esolution of the investiture controversy. Abroad, he waged several camp aigns in order to consolidate and expand his continental possessions. W as so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him. In 1106 h e captured Robert and held him til he died. He proved to be a hard but j ust ruler. One of his lovers, Nest, Princess of Deheubarth, was known a s the most beautiful woman in Wales; she had many lovers. He aparently d ied from over eating Lampreys. During a Christmas court at Windsor Cast le in 1126 that Henry I, who had no legitimate male heir, tried to forc e his barons to accept his daughter Matilda as his successor. The Anglo -Saxon Chronicles reported that "...there he caused archbishops and bis hops and abbots and earls all the thegns that were there to swear to gi ve England and Normandy after his death into the hand of his daughter". S wear they did, but they were not happy about it. None of those present w ere interested in being among the first to owe allegiance to a woman. T he stage was set for the 19-year-long bloody struggle for the throne th at rent England apart after Henry's death. Ironically, the final resolu tion to that civil war, the peace treaty between King Stephen and Matil da's son Henry of Anjou, was ratified on Christmas Day at Westminster i n 1153.

_______________________
The youngest son of William the Conqueror, Henri "Beauclerc" (Good S cholar) ruled not just England but Normandy, as well. He succeeded in s trengthening the powers of the English crown and made significant refor ms in the royal treasury. His reign was marked by conflict with Anselm o f Canterbury.
The loss of Henry's son in the wreck of the White Ship left only a d aughter, Matilda, to inherit. Although the barons promised him they wou ld support her, after his death the kingdom fell into civil war when a m ale claimant, Stephen, took the throne.________________________
