of Germany. Geoffrey was her second husband. When her husband Henry die d, her
father recalled her to his court and made the barons swear to accept he r as
their ruler in the event of his dying without a male heir. Her second h usband
was 16 when she married him against her will.

The Empress Maud, also known as Matilda, Empress of Germany, Countess o f
Anjou, Domina Anglorum, Lady of the English, Matilda Augusta and M atilda
the Good, was the daughter of King Henry I of England and Normandy .
Although she was made heir by her father, the Barons refused to ac cept
her as ruler, and crowned her cousin instead. She then invaded En gland,
and waged a long civil war that lasted many years. Finally her co usin
