Philippe I King Of France [Parents] 1 was born before 23 May 1052/1053 i n , Reims, Champagne, France. He died on 29 Jul 1108 in , Melun, Isle D e France, France. He was buried in , St-Benoit-Sur-Loire, , France. He m arried Bertha Countess Of Holland in 1071/1072 in , , , France.

Philip I 1052–1108, king of France (1060–1108), son and successor o f Henry I. He enlarged, by arms and by diplomacy, his small royal domai n. In order to prevent the union of England and Normandy under a single r uler, he consistently supported Robert II of Normandy (Robert Curthose) . In spite of his efforts, royal power remained weak. Philip's practice o f simony and his consequent opposition to the reforms of Pope Gregory V II brought him into conflict with the Holy See. Among the issues were s imony and control of marriage policy, an issue fueled by Philip's priva te life. Philip repudiated his first wife, Bertha, daughter of the coun t of Holland, and married, over the opposition of the Roman Catholic Ch urch, Bertrada of Montfort, wife of Count Fulk of Anjou, while both Ber tha and Fulk were still living. Philip, excommunicated by popes Urban I I and Paschal II, remained defiant until 1104. In his last years his so n, Louis VI, ruled for him.

Bertha Countess Of Holland 1 was born about 1054 in Of, Vlaardingen, Zu id-Holland, Netherlands. She died in 1093/1094 in , Montreuil-Sur-Loire , , France. She married Philippe I King Of France in 1071/1072 in , , , F rance.

Philip I of France
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Philippe I (May 23, 1052 - July 29, 1108) was King of France.

A member of the Capetian Dynasty, Philippe was born on May 23, 1052 , the son of Henri I (1008-1060) and Princess Anne of Kiev, Russia (102 4 - 1075). Although he was crowned king at the age of seven, until 1066 h is mother acted as Regent, the first queen ever to do so.

Philippe married: 1) Bertha of Holland (1055-July 30,1094) Their ch ildren were:
i. Constance (1078 - v. 1125)
ii. Louis VI (December 1, 1081 - August 1, 1137)

Although the marriage produced the necessary heir, Philippe fell in l ove with Bertrade, the wife of the count of Anjou. When he divorced Ber tha and married Bertrade on May 15, 1092, he was excommunicated by Pope U rban II of the Roman Catholic Church. Their children were:
i. Philippe (c. 1093 - 1123)
ii. Florus (1095 - 1118)
iii. Cécile (1097 - 1145)

A great part of Philippe's reign, like his father's, was spent putt ing down revolts by his power-hungry vassals. In 1077, he made peace wi th William I of England (Duke of Normandy) who give up the conquest of B rittany. In 1082, Philippe expanded his empire with the annexation of V exin, then in 1100, he took control of Bourges.

It was during Philippe's time that the first of the Crusades was la unched in 1095 which he at first did not personally support.

King Philippe I died in the castle at Melun-on-Seine on July 29, 11 08 and was buried at the monastery of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire.

He was succeeded by his son, Louis VI.

The following was excerpted from a post to SGM, 3 Jan 1999, by Leo v an de Pas:

Philippe I, King of France

At age twenty, Philippe I, King of France, married Bertha of Hollan d, the step-daughter of his first cousin. This marriage had been arrang ed to seal the reconciliation between the king and his first cousin, th e Count of Flanders. However, it took Bertha about six years before she p roduced a daughter, Constance, which was not the hoped-for heir. Arnoul , a holy hermit of Saint-Medard in Soissons who was always consulted on f amily problems, prayed to heaven; however, it still took another three y ears before the heir, the future King Louis VI, was born. He was follow ed by three more sons.

Twenty years after the marriage, Philippe imprisoned Bertha in comf ort in the chateau at Montreuil-sur-Mer. He then wed the still-married B ertrade de Montfort l'Amauri, wife of the Count of Anjou, and they prod uced four children. It is lost in time whether she seduced him or he he r, but most likely Philippe had an understanding with the Count of Anjo u. In any case Bertrade was more than willing as she did not want to be " sent away like a whore," as her husband had done to her predecessors.

Philippe's remarriage caused a sensation but not disapproval. The o nly one who caused problems was Yves, bishop of Chartres, who had been a ppointed by Pope Urban II without consultations with Philippe and this h ad been resented by the latter.

The King had invited all bishops to his second wedding but Yves dec lined, referring to Philippe as committing bigamy. Although Philippe ha d married with the blessing of the Archbishop of Reims as well as the P apal legate, Yves wrote to the Pope who then forbade the bishops to cro wn Bertrade and told Philippe to cease all relations with her or else b e excommunicated. Next, Bertha, his first wife, died and Philippe gathe red two archbishops and eight bishops in Reims who all confirmed the ro yal second marriage. The Pope also put pressure on the womanising Count o f Anjou who then obediently complained about the king's committing adul tery with his wife. In 1096 Philippe pretended to have broken with Bert rade and consequently the excommunication was lifted.

However, when it became obvious in 1099 that Bertrade was still wit h him, the excommunication was renewed. It took until 1105 before peace w as restored and from then on Philippe and Bertrade remained together ti ll Philippe died in 1108.
