!Succeeded to the throne on the death of his father Sancho III when onl y 3. Troubled by interference from Navarre in his youth, he later allie d Castile with Aragon, forming a connection that was eventually to beco me the basis for the unification of Spain. From the 1170s, he was occu pied with resisting encroachments by the Almohads, Muslim invaders from n orthern Africa. Defeated
by the Muslim caliph Ykub al-Mansur at Alarcos in 1195, Alfonso and his a llies won a major victory over the Muslim commander al-Nasir at Navas d e Tolosa in 1212. [Funk & Wagnalls]

b. 1155, d. 1214. Son of Sancho III of Castile; king of Castile (1166-1 214). After a chaotic minority, Alfonso assumed control of his kingdom i n 1166 and m. Eleanor, dau. of Henry II of England, in 1169. He receive d the reversion of Gascony as her dowry, but in 1204 on the death of El eanor of Aquitaine had to claim it by force, later losing it to King Jo hn of England. He endowed the royal abbey of Las Huelgas, near Burgos, i n 1187, at his wife's requets; the abbey was also to be their royal mau soleum. In 1195 Alfonso was defeated by the Moors at Alarcos, and Casti le was invaded by the armies of neighbouring Leon and Navarre, but he f ought back and forced their leaders to terms.
