On the side of the rebels in Lincoln on 20 May 1217. From their positio n low down in the city of Lincoln, the rebel leaders could not assess t he size of the army confronting them on the hill, and two Englishmen, S aar de Quincy and Robert Fitzwalter, went out to reconnoitre. They retu rned to report that the royalist army was outnumbered by their own men a nd there was therefore a good chance of winning a battle. This was soun d advice. Records give 611 knights and 1000 foot-soldiers to the rebels , and 406 knights and 317 cross-bowmen to the royalists. However, the C ount de Perche, being French, had no confidence in English judgment and w ent out to see for himself. He not only counted the knights' banners, b ut also the great car-standards fluttering over the baggage waggons, an d reckoned an army of double the size.
