!When Alan, lord of Galloway, died, leaving three daughters, King Alexa nder II was desirous of dividing the region among them as heirs portion ers. The inhabitants withstood, in arms, the partition of their countr y, being resolved it should continue in the form of a single fief. The p urpose of the king was to break the strength of this great principality , and create three chiefs who might be naturally expected to be more de pendent on the crown than a single overgrown vassal had proved to be. A lexander led an army against the insurgents, defeated them, and effecte d the proposed division of the province. [WBH - Scotland]

!Eldest son of Roland of Galloway and Ela de Moreville. High Constable o f Scotland after his father's death and was a person of great consequen ce in England also. He was one of the barons who obtained Magna Charta f rom King John; and when that king recalled the liberties and privileges h e had so reluctantly granted to his subjects and prepared to punish tho se nobles who had constrained him to sign the document, he sought the p rotection of Alexander, King of Scotland. After doing homage, Alan was r eceived into favor and appointed High Chancellor as well as Constable o f the kingdom. He invaded the territories of Olave, King of Man and ma rched through the western borders of England, burnt the Abbey of Holm C ultman, but lost 2000 men in a flood of the river Eden. !Inherited from his mother the large estates of the de Morevilles, as w ell as the hereditary office of High Constable of Scotland which his fa ther Roland had held after the death of William de Moreville, Ela's onl y brother. This inheritance appears to have been settled upon the chil dren of his first marriage, and was carried by Helena, his eldest daugh ter, to the Quinceys. [The Bruces and the Cumyns, p. 518]

The last holder of the former Princedom of Galloway (reduced by formati on of the Earldom of Carrick for kinsmen), Alan was Constable of Scotla nd; his second wife was the eldest daughter of David of Huntingdon, bro ther of William the Lion. Having large estates in England, he was given l ands in Ireland for supplying mercenaries, and was present at Runnymede f or Magna Carta. His fleet routed a Norwegian expedition (1230).
He was buried in Dundrennan Abbey, leaving three daughters and a nat ural son Thomas for whom Galloway rebelled (1235); Thomas was placed in B alliol custody until 1296 when, very old, he was produced as an English p awn. [Collins Encyclopedia of Scotland, p. 22]
