Lord of Berkhampstead; Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1234; Lord Justice of Ir eland in 1246. John, being next male heir of that family on the death o f William FitzPiers, Earl of Essex, in 1227, paid a fine to the king of 3 00 marks for those lands which were his father's and did by hereditary r ight belong to him, whereof this last Earl William died seised. In the 1 8th year of Henry III, this John was constituted Sheriff of Yorkshire; a nd in the 21st year of the same reign, upon the treaty then made betwee n the king and the barons, whereby, in consideration of the great chart er and charters of the forests being confirmed, a thirtieth part of all m en's moveables were given to the king, this feudal lord was admitted on e of the privy council held at London, he was one of those at the time s ent to the Pope's legate, to prohibit his attempting anything therein p rejudicial to the interests of the king and the kingdom. In 8 years aft erwards, John Fitz Geoffrey was one of the commissioners sent from King H enry (with Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and others) to the council at L yons, in order to complain of the great extractions made upon the realm b y the holy see; and the next year, 1246, was constituted Justice of Ire land, where, for his services, he received a grant from the crown of th e Isles of Thomond. John was the feudal lord of Berkhampstead and Kirtl ing manors, and of Shere, Fambridge and other estates. He d. Nov 1258. [ UTZ@aol.com]
