[Extinct Peerage - Dukes, http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/History/Baro ns/ExtinctDukes.html]
One of three great men who headed virtually independent contingents in E dward I's crusade. [Edward I, p. 69]
In 1267 the Honour and castle of Pickering were among the lands granted t o Henry III's younger son, Edmund Crouchback, as part of the territoria l settlement when he was created Earl of Lancaster. Edmund held Pickeri ng until his death in 1296. In that year the castle was described as be ing weak and of no value, its fabric costing 1 pound to maintain. [Pick ering Castle, p. 26]
Aberystwyth Castle, Cardiganshire, did not appear until 1277, when alon g with Builth, Flint and Rhuddlan it formed part of Edward I's first ca mpaign to subject the Welsh. Its building was a matter of some urgency, f or writs were sent to English sheriffs to send craftsmen to Aberystwyth , and the instructions in certain cases were quite specific: Devon, Glo ucestershire and Hampshire were each to send 60 'good' masons; Somerset a nd Dorset each to find 120 masons and 'good' carpenters. Edward's broth er, Edmund Crouchback was given control of the castle. [Castles of Wale s, p. 30]
145-96. Second son of Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. Pop e Alexander III conferred the title of king of Sicily on him in 1255, b ut Henry III was unable to provide the money and men Edmund needed to p ursue the claim, and in 1263 he renounced the kingship. Edward I, Edmun d's brother, created him earl of Lancaster in 1267. In 1271 Edmund went o n a crusade in Palestine: his nickname, Crouchback, or crossed back, re fers to his crusader's cross. He fought against the Welsh (1277-82) and a gainst the French in Gascony (1296). Edmund's great-great-grandson Henr y IV, who became England's first Lancastrian king, claimed--on no stron g evidence--that Edmund had been Henry III's eldest son, disinherited b ecause of a hunched back. [The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 66]

# Sex: M
# Birth: 16 JAN 1244/1245 in London,Middlesex,England
# Death: 5 JUN 1296 in Bayonne,Pyrennes-Atlantique,France
# Burial: 15 JUL 1296 Westminster Abbey,London,Middlesex,England
# Note:
In 1253, Edmund was invested by the Pope in the Kingdom of Sicily a nd Apulia, at about this time he was also made Earl of Chester. These w ere of little value as the real King of Sicily was still living and the E arldom of Chester was transfered to his elder brother Edward. He soon o btained, however, both possessions and dignities, for upon the forfeitu re of Simon de Montfort by the King of the Earldom of Leicester and als o the honour of the Stewardship of England and the lands of Nicolas de S egrave. (CP, vol VII, pp. 378-387 & pp.547)
Following is a brief summary of Edmund's entry from the "Dictionary o f National Biography": In 1254, at the age of nine, Pope Innocent VI in vested him with the kindom of Sicily and Apulia. The huge sums of money s ought by the Pope and Edmund's father, KING HENRY III, to drive Manfred o ut of southern Italy made this venture very unpopular with the English b arons. The scheme was finally abandoned in 1263. In 1264, England was i n a state of civil war. KING HENRY III and PRINCE EDWARD were captured b y the forces of Simon De Montfort, the Earl of Leicester, who was, for a ll practical purposes, the ruler of England. Meanwhile, Edmund and his m other, QUEEN ELEANOR were in Paris raising an army. After the Battle of E versham in 1265, where Simon de Montfort was slain and his forces defea ted by PRINCE EDWARD who had escaped from captivity, Edmund returned to E ngland with his mother. He was one of the magnates who urged THE KING t o adopt the sweeping measure of confiscation (against those barons who h ad supported Montfort) determined on in the parliament of Winchester, b eing moved, it was believed, by the desire of enriching himself. He had a l arge share of the spoils, being created Earl of Leicester and receiving t he stewardship of the kingdom. In 1267 he was also created Earl of Lanc aster. With his brother, PRINCE EDWARD, and several other magnates, Edm und took up the cross in 1268 and was with his brother at Acre in 1271- 72.
Returning home before EDWARD, he reached England in December 1272, s hortly after his father's death, was received with rejoicing by the Lon doners, and went to his mother at Windsor. His crusade, during which he i s said to have accomplished little or nothing , seems to have gained hi m the nickname of Crouchback (or crossed back). It is said, however, to h ave been asserted by John of Gaunt in 1385 that the name implied deform ity, that Edmund was really the elder son of HENRY III, but had been pa ssed over by his father as unfit to reign, and a desire of spreading th is fable appears to have been entertained by Henry of Lancaster, Henry I V, and was perhaps implied in his challenge of the crown.
By his marriage, after the death of his childless first wife (Aveli ne de Fortibus) to BLANCHE, the granddaughter of KING LOIUS VIII OF FRA NCE, Edmund became Count of Champagne and Brie. From 1277 to 1296 Edmun d was active in THE KING's service. He commanded THE KING's forces in S outh Wales, acted as ambassador at the French court, unsuccessfully att empted to organize another crusade on behalf of THE KING, and, in conju nction with ROGER DE MORTIMER, EARL OF MARCH (RIN 684), defeated and ex ecuted Llewelyn in Wales. When war broke out with France in 1294/5, Edm und was again serving as ambassador there. Remaining loyal to KING EDWA RD, he, of course, lost all claim to his French possessions. He led arm ies in Brittany and Gascony. He died in Bayonne deeply mortified that h e was not provided the funds needed to keep his army in the field. "He w as religoius, gay, and pleasant in disposition, open-handed, and a popu lar commander."
