!4th Earl of Hertford; 6th Earl of Clare. In 1196 he gave 1000 marks to t he king for livery of the lands of his mother's inheritance, with his p roportion of those some time belonging to Giffard, Earl of Buckingham. H is name appears in the covenant made between King John and the Barons, a nd as he did not die until Dec 30, 1218, and there being no other promi nent man of his name, it is very likely that he was the Surety named. H e was buried either at Clare, or in the middle of the choir of the prio ry of Tunbridge, which he founded. [Magna Charta Barons, p. 87, 221]

RICHARD de CLARE, the Surety, was the fourth Earl of Hertford but, like h is father and uncle, was more generally known as Earl of Clare. He was p resent at the Coronation of King Richard I at Westminster, 3 September 1 189, and of King John, 27 May 1199. He sided with the Barons against Ki ng John, and his Castle at Tonbridge was taken. On 9 November 1215 he w as one of the commissioners who, on the part of the Barons, was to trea t of peace with the King. On 4 March 1215/6 his lands in counties Cambr idge, Norfolk, Suffolk; and Essex were granted to Robert de Betun; he a nd his son were among the Barons excommunicated by the Pope in 1215. He d ied between 3 October and 28 November 1217. He married Amicia, Countess o f Gloucester, second daughter of William FitzRobert, Earl of Gloucester , and his wife, Hawise, daughter of Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicest er. She died 1 January 1224/5.
