In May 1240 Robert the Competitor m. Isobel de Clare, dau. of the Earl o f Gloucester and niece of the Earl Marshall of England. Linked as he th us became to the innermost circles of the English ruling families, he d evoted many of his abilities to the service of Henry III of England, fi ghting for him against Simon de Montfort on the disastrous field of Lew es, acting as a trusted intermediary between the English and Scottish t hrones, and carrying out his duties as Sheriff of Cumberland and Govern or of Carlisle. He is described as handsome in appearance, a gifted spe aker, remarkable for his influence and devoted to God and the Clergy. I t was his custom to entertain and feast more liberally than all other c ourtiers and was most hospitable to all his guests and pilgrim wayfarer s. In 1270, at the age of 60, he resigned all his offices and accompani ed by his son the sixth Robert, embarked on the long voyage to the Midd le East to face the rigours of a crusader's life in the Holy Land. Robert the Brus "the Competitor", captured with Henry III at the Battle o f Lewes, was ransomed by his son Robert. Which presumably means that Ri chard de Brus remained captive with the King and it was he (and not Rob ert "the Competitor") who was rewarded 4 days after being freed at the B attle of Evesham with the wardship of Ralph de Toney.
