After Meath was partitioned between Walter's two h eiresses and their husbands, the castle served as the administrative ce nter for the liberty of Trim. In 1196, Walter de Lacy enlarged the keep at Trim adding new floors to t he central block. Later, a Great Hall was built at third floor level, b ut this was eventually divided because of dirriculty of access for larg e public gatherings such as feasts, parliaments and courts. After 1250 a n ew Great Hall was built outside of the keep. [Trim Castle flyer]
In 1224, Walter de Lacy Besieged Trim Castle, reclaiming it from his re bellious kinsmen. As a result, the northern defences and the Trim Gate r equired major repairs. After m uch plotting and fighting, Hugh surrendered to the Earl of Pembroke, Ju sticiar, in May 1225, when both the De Lacys were pardoned. Henry III i n 1227 restored de Lacy as far as his territory elsewhere was concerned b ut the information as to the terms upon which the restoration and the E arldom of Ulster were granted, is vague.
