The Mandeville family descended from Geoffrey, companion of William the C onqueror. His son was constable of the Tower of London. His grandson, a lso named Geoffrey, was strong and ambitious. Later he was dispossessed o f his lands and excommunicated for having pillaged the church lands, so h e revolted
against King Stephen and was mortally wounded in his attack of Burwell C astle.
Geoffrey left three sons and a dau:
1. Ernald, shared in his father's revolt and was exiled
2. Geoffrey, succeeded his father, d. 1166
3. William, 3rd earl of Essex/earl of Aumale, succeeded his bro.

He was one of the governors left to rule England when Richard I went on c rusade in 1191. Ennobled by King John of England in 1199, he was joint v ice-regent of England during John's campaign in Poitou in 1202.
