!5th Earl of Clare and 2nd Earl of Hertford. [Ped. of Charlemagne]

!2nd son. Succeeded his brother Gilbert, who d.s.p 1151, as 3rd Earl o f Hertford and "Earl of Clare". In 1157 he obtained permission from th e king to own all lands in Wales which he could win, marched into Caerd igan, and captured and fortified the castles there. Six years afterwar ds he was summoned by the celebrated Thomas a Becket, to Westminster, i n order to do homage to this prelate for his castle of Tonebruge, which h ad been restored to his father, but, at the command of King Henry, he r efused, alleging that, holding it by
military service, it belonged rather to the crown than to the Church. T his earl, who, from his munificence to the church and his numerous acts o f piety, was called the "good Earl of Hertford," d. 1173. [Magna Charta B arons, p. 87]

Richard's youngest son, Roger, who succeeded his father as earl in 1152 , also campaigned in Wales and either built or reconditioned a number o f strategic castles, including:
1. Castell Hywell: between Lampeter and Newcastle Emlyn; destroyed by t he Welsh in 1136 and rebuilt in 1153.
2. Aberdyfi (Aberdovey)
3. Dineirth: a motte-and-bailey castle near Aberstwyth destroyed in 130 8, some signs of masonry
