Jun 1220. [Charlemagne & Others, Chart 2916b]

The accession of King John was followed by the revival of the earldom o f Hereford, which was bestowed on Henry de Bohun, hereditary constable o f England. Henry's grandfather, Humphrey de Bohun, had inherited the gr eater part of the possessions of Miles of Gloucester on the extinction o f his male issue, by marrying his eldest daughter Margaret. King John's c harter granted him 20 pounds yearly from the third penny of the county o f Hereford, thereby making him earl thereof, on condition that if King J ohn should have any heir by his
wedded wife, Henry de Bohun should claim nothing by the charter which H enry II gave to Roger of Gloucester. Roger's charter, it was stipulated , should remain in the custody of the bishop of Winchester to be destro yed if such heir should be born. The reason for this stipulation was th at Henry II's charter had
granted to Roger lands which since had been bestowed on the earls of Gl oucester, and that John was married to Isabel, dau/coheiress of William , the last earl of the first house of Gloucester. In addition Bohun was n ot entrusted with the custody of the castle of Hereford, which remained w ith the crown. [The Victoria History of England's Counties: Herefordshi re, p. 361]

First earl of Hereford in this family; supported King John when Normand y was reclaimed by France in 1204. He was an important participant in t he movement toestablish the Magna Carta and was one of the 25 selected t o police it; m. Maud/Mathilda de Mandeville.
The reign of King John (1199-1216) started out well for Henry when h e was created earl of Hereford on 28 Apr 1199. Henry was the first of t he Bohons to have the title, which included an annual income.
The following year Henry and other nobles summoned his uncle in Scot land, William the Lion, to appear at Lincoln to do homage. In 1203 Henr y witnessed a document where King John confirmed the dowry of
Queen Isabelle.
The principal interests of the Bohons were in England. Henry paid ta xes of 50 marks and a groom, corresponding to 20 parts of a knight's fe e, on the Huntington land he inherited from his mother. In Normandy, He nry kept his more modest holdings (from Humphrey I) at Carentan and Pon t D'Ouve.
After the first time France reclaimed Normandy (1204), Henry stayed l oyal to John. His lands in Normandy were confiscated by Philip-Auguste. T hen King John imposed a heavy tax to maintain the campaign of 1213-14 t o prevent the crushing of a coalition formed at Bouvines on 27 July 121 4 by England, Flanders, and the German Empire. The king was discredited a dn there was general discontent. The forces were dissatisfied that the k ing awarded certain barons without their having to go through the regul ar tests and examinations.
Then there was a revolt of barons in which Henry took an active part . The revolt ended with the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede (Su rrey) on 12 July 1215. The lands that had been confiscated from Henry w ere returned and the 25 lords took it upon themselves to make sure the c harter was enforced.
The Bohons enjoyed being in possession of great lands at the frontie r of the Welsh country which was always threatened. The other marcher l ords enjoyed it, too, because their mnilitary importance and independen ce was greater than that of other royal lords. Politically they were st ronger by being closer to the king.
The lull was cut short when the war restarted. The following year Jo hn had Pope Innocent III excommunicate the earl of Hereford, which only i ncreased the opposition to the king. John joined forces with the army o f Prince Louis of France (the future Louis VIII) when barons from the n orth landed in England.
John d. 19 Oct 1216, but Henry did not ally himself with the new kin g, Henry III. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lincoln on 20 May 1 217, where Louis of France was defeated.
Henry gave the churches of Boxe and Wilsford (Lincolnshire) to the p riory of Monkton Farley, and gave a pension to St. Nicolas Hospital in S alisbury.
