At the Battle of Lincoln, Robert de Ropsley broke his lance against the E arl of Salisbury but the Marshal dealt him such a blow between the shou lders that he almost unseated him. Robert let himself slide from his ho rse and went off to hide. [Lincoln Castle, p. 39]

Son of Henry II and possibly Rosamund Clifford. William counselled his h alf-brother King John to grant Magna Carta in 1215. In 1216 he joined P rince Louis of France (later Louis VIII), who was trying to seize the E nglish crown from John, but the following year gave his allegiance to H enry II and served the young king faithfully.
