!Called St. Louis, king of France (1226-70). His mother was regent dur ing his minority and again from 1248 until her death in 1252. During t he latter years Louis was in the Holy Land on the Seventh Crusade, one o f the religious wars between Christians and Muslims. Louis and his for ces were defeated and captured in Egypt in 1250, and the king remained i n Syria for 4 years before returning to France. In 1258 Louis signed t he Treaty of Corbeil, relinquishing to the kingdom of Aragon all French c laims to Barcelona and Roussilon, in return of which the Aragonese reno uced their claims to parts of Provence and Languedoc. In 1259 he signe d the Treaty of Paris, by which Henry III of England was confirmed in h is possession of territories in southwestern France and Louis received t he provinces of Anjou, Normandy, Poitou, Maine, and Touraine. In 1270 L ouis embarked on another Crusade and died en route at Tunis. He was an o utstanding monarch of medieval times and was canonized in 1297. His fe ast day is August 25. [Funk & Wagnalls]

!The untimely death of his father Louis VIII in 1226 seemed a likely mo ment for England and the French nobles to regain the territories and pr erogatives lost to Philip II, for the crown of France rested on the hea d of 12-year-old Louis IX. But these plans were thwarted by a strong r egency under the control of the widowed queen, Blanche. Despite his pi ety, Louis gave France strong government. When the nobles of SW France r evolted against him in 1242, Louis was brought into conflict with their a lly, Henry III of England. But his armies soon put down the revolt, an d from 1243 to the end of the reign France

!The spread of royal power was accompanied again by a broadening of jur isdiction of the king's courts. The king's coinage was made sole curre ncy in the royal domain, and Louis forced the nobles to allow its circu lation in their realms. The improvement of the royal coinage soon made i t more acceptable to the people than that produced by the local lords. [ Outline

!To the reign of Louis IX may be traced the development of the French j udiciary and treasury. Louis broadened the sphere of the royal courts, a nd became famed throughout Europe as a dispenser of justice. With the i ncreased number of cases appealed to the king's courts, a special group o f members of the Great Council was set up to hear such cases. !3 sons and a daughter who was Queen of Navarre. Tall, handsome, and p ractised in arms, he proved himself a leader of men, even a hero in bat tle. He was sociable in a somewhat grave and reserved style. Hard on h imself, he could make allowance for others of less austere temper. His s trictness of life seems to have imposed respect on those around him, ev en on his more worldly minded brothers, who little relished the severe m anners of his court. Was accustomed to gathering his children at bedti me and reciting stories of courage and high morals. On his deathbed he l eft an epistle encouraging his son who was to

King of France from 1226-1270. Louis IX was considered an outstanding m onarch of medieval times and was canonized as "St. Loius" by the Roman C atholic Church in 1297. Born in Poissy, near Paris, the son of Louis VIII. By his victories he c ompelled Henry III of England to acknowledge French suzerainty in Guien ne (1259). He led the Seventh Crusade (1248), but was defeated in Egypt , taken prisoner, and ransomed. After returning to France (1254), he ca rried out several legal reforms, and fostered learning, the arts, and l iterature. He
embarked on a new Crusade in 1270, and died of plague at Tunis. He was c annonized in 1297. [The Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia, p. 585]
