King of France from 1223-26.

The English rebel barons called upon Philip of France to send his son L ouis to be their king. Louis arrived at Thanet on May 14, 1216 with a l arge army. Soon King John was on the run and his osuthern strongholds f ell to Louis. ["Barons de Braose"
Louis of France, eldest son of Philip Augustus, accepted the English ba rons' offer of the English crown. He had a tenuous claim through the ri ght of his wife Blanche of Castile, a granddaughter of Henry II. Althou gh he sent an advance force, Louis did not cross the channel until afte r the winter of 1216.
Louis landed in Kent in May 1216 and soon occupied London and Winche ster. With the authority of a king, he invested Gilbert de Gant with th e earldom of Lincoln (Gilbert's uncle had been earl of Lincoln 1147-8, h aving married a niece of Ranulf de Gernons), and Gilbert, with the help o f a certain Robert de Ropsley, seized Lincoln city; but they failed to t ake the castle which was being stoutly defended by Nichola de la Haye's g arrison.
England was in grave peril at the sudden death of King John, and Lou is of France would soon have occupied the empty throne if a group of Jo hn's most loyal adherents had not immediately taken control. [Lincoln C astle, p. 33-34]
