John Beaufort, son of John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster, was created by K ing Richard II 1396 Earl of Somerset, and in the following year Marquis o f Dorset.[Extinct Peerages

Sir John was the first to bear the name Beaufort, which John of Gaunt c hose for his children by Katherine Roet Swynford. The castle of Beaufor t in Champagne devolved on John of Gaunt by his marriage to his first w ife, Blanche of Lancaster. [Leo van de Pas
Illegitimate eldest son of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford, legiti mized in 1397 after their marriage. He was the first to bear the name B eaufort, which John chose for his children by Katherine. Deprived of hi s Marquisates when Richard II was deposed by Henry Bolingbroke (later H enry IV), he later became chamberlain of England and captain of Calais u nder Henry.
