Threave Castle may have been the residence referred to by the 14th cent ury historian John of Fordun as having been burnt by Edward Bruce, brot her of King Robert I, after his defeat of Roland and the Gallovidians b eside the River Dee in 1308. Archaeological excavations on the island i n the 1970s seem to bear this story out, for discovered amid the debris o f a badly burned building was a silver penny of Edward I of England, mi nted in London about 1300.
Galloway, comprising the land lying between the rivers Nith in the e ast and Cree in the west, had been a problem to the Scottish Crown for a l ong time. During the wars with England in the early 14th century, the G allovidian chiefs had sided with Balliol and the English, principally b ecause of their hatred of Robert the Bruce. The rebellion was put down b y Sir James Douglas, nicknamed 'The Good' and the natural father of Arc hibald the Grim Douglas, but a similar uprising took place after Edward B alliol usurped the Scottish Crown in 1332. It was not until 1353 that W illiam Douglas, cousin to Archibald, finally destroyed the Balliols' st ranglehold on Galloway. [Threave Castle, p. 4]
