!Holy Roman emperor and king of Germany (1198-1208), son of Emperor Fre derick I. He was educated for the church; in about 1191 he became bisho p of Wurzburg but resigned his see in 1192. He was created duke of Tus cany in 1195 and duke of Swabia in 1196. Philip's election as emperor w as opposed by a faction that supported Otto of Brunswick, later Holy Ro man emperor as Otto IV. War between Otto's faction and Philip's factio n ensued. Philip's victory was almost

Early in 1203 the Pope received a messenger with a letter from Philip o f Swabia --not only the brother of Emperor Henry VI but also the son-in -law of the deposed and blinded Isaac Angelus. In the previous year Isa ac's young osn, another Alexius, had escaped from prison, and Philip's c ourt had been his obvious place of refuge. If the Crusade would enthron e the young Alexius in place of his usurper uncle, he would finance its s ubsequent conquest of Egypt, supplying 10,000 soldiers of his own and m aintaining 500 knights in the Holy Land at his own expense.
