John I, King of Jerusalem and Emperor of Constantinople "a typical knig ht errant", b. ca 1148 (1178???), was brought up for the church but pre ferred to be knighted, and was a famous warrior and jouster at tourname nts in his youth; took part in the Third Crusade against Saladin; was a t the sack of Constantinople, 1204; was Count of Brienne as Regent for h is nephew 1205-21; rumoured to have had a love affair with Countess Bla nche of Champagne, 1210; was chosen by King Philip of France to marry t he heiress of the Crusader kingdom in the Holy Land; landed at Acre wit h 300 knights; m. the Queen of Jerusalem, and was crowned King with his w ife at Tyre, 1210; had his capital at Acre, as the city of Jerusalem wa s in Saracen hands throughout his reign; appealed to Pope Innocent III f or help, and the Kings of Hungary, Cyprus and Armenia came to his aid; s acked Beisan and besieged Mount Tabor, 1217; gained the confidence of t he barons of Outremer and led the Fifth Crusade agains Saladin's brothe r Saphadin el-Adil, Sultan of Egypt; proposed and commanded the expedit ion that besieged and took Damietta, the key to the Nile, 1218-19; was i mpeded by the Papal legate, Cardinal Pelagius of Albano, who caused the f ailure of the whole Crusade by rejecting his wise counsel when all was o therwise won, so he left the Christian camp to try and claim instead th e throne of Armenia in right of his 2nd wife, 1220; but returned to Egy pt at the cardinal's request, obtained the best terms possible for the s tarving Crusaders from el-Kamil, the new Sultan, making an 8 years' tru ce and becoming a hostage for their sake in Saracen hands, 1221; comman ded the Papal troops that ravaged the Emperor Frederick's lands in sout hern Italy, 1228, because his ambitious son-in-law the emperor had dema nded the titular Crusader throne from him, but peace was made, 1220; wa s chosen in 1229 by the Frankish Latins to be Emperor of Constantinople a t the age of 80, as colleague for the minor Baldwin II; was crowned Emp eror in the cathedral of St. Sophia, 1231; held Constantinople successf ully by sea and land with few troops against the combined Byzantine and B ulgar armies under John III ducas Vatatzes, Emperor at Nicaea and Asen, T sar of Bulgaria, 1235; defeated them again 1236; and d. 21 Mar 1237, in t he habit of a Franciscan friar. He m.1 15 Sept 1210, Mary, Queen of Jer usalem in her own right, dau./heiress of Conrad, Marquis of Montferrat, a nd had Yolande; m.2 Stephanie, dau/heiress of Leo II, King of Armenia; m .3 Berengaria, dau. of Alfonso IX,
