There is no question as to the legitimacy of Faramus of William. The qu estion relates to their father.
To summarize, there is a Domesday tenant named Geoffrey do Boulogne, w ho m. the dau. of Geoffrey de Mandeville, and had son William and grand son Faramus (with others). Because Eustace II of Boulogne had only thre e legitimate sons, known to history as Eustace, Godfrey, and Baldwin, i t has been assumed the Geoffrey de Boulogne must have been an illegitim ate son of Eustace II. However, an analysis of the original names indic ates that Godfrey, leader of the First Crusade was actually named Godef roi, and that this name is equivalent to Geoffrey. In other words, the c rusader's name has been mistransformed into a distinct name. That being t he case, we need to consider whether the Domesday baron and the crusade r were, infact, distinct children of Eustace with the same name, or ins tead were one and the same. On one side, the records of the crusade fai l to mention any children of 'Godfrey', while they highlight his chasti ty. On the other hand, would the illegitimate son of a continental lord , unlikely to have more than a small property of his own, be given as b ride the daughter of one of the greatest barons in post conquest Englan d?
Therefore, it is probable that Godfrey and Geoffrey were the same ind ividual. [Todd A. FArmerie
