Kevin Carroll Evans reports at the Evans/Hargraves site "Original B rown arriving in VA. with a Thomas White in 1634 on the ship James and R evenge (Source: Virginia - Colonial Abstracts by Beverley Fleet). It st ates that Original was "old and decrepit" so this could be your ancesto r who was born in 1575." This information comes from: Kevin C. Evans P. O. William R. Compton wrcomp@islc.net reports at the Ancestors of Will iam R. and Mary L. Compton site "William Claiborne was trying to establ ish a settlement on Kent Island, on the Eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay , in an area already given by the King to Lord Calvert. In 1634 Claibor ne brought over several shiploads of indentured servants. Original Brow ne (spelled Ariginall on roster - a corruption of Reginald?) was one of 3 6 brought on the "James" and the "Revenge." His son William came the sa me year on the "Dove." When Claiborne got to fighting with the Maryland ers and lost a ship, his English backers sent over George Evelyn to str aighten things out. Evelyn was given a handsome manor in St. Mary's Cou nty by Lord Calvert and may have been influenced by that. He encouraged t he absorption of Kent Island into Maryland, and freed many of the inden tured servants, including Original, from their obligation. On the ship' s roster, Original was described as "old and decrepit," but later was l isted without comment among the woodcutters and laborers. In 1653 Origi nal was named by Claiborne as one of 100 men being settled on a 5000 ac re tract of land north of the Pamunkey River in Virginia. The men had t o be settled there for Claiborne to claim the land. Whether Original wa s still alive is a question. It was not unusual for fraudulent names to b e used to pad such lists. A number of people from St. Mary's County in M aryland were on the list. Original is listed as dying in Virginia in 16 55, but this may have been part of the fraud, and he may actually have d ied previously in Maryland.
