William Griffith, Jr. lived on Black Acre and had it surveyed on April 1 2, 1742. (Not to be confused with an earlier Black Acre surveyed for Wi lliam Black of London, 1724.) The younger William Griffith had come to w estern Maryland by 1734 when he leased two lots (10,000 acres) on "Carr ollton" between "Monoccose and Potowmack." He was appointed Constable f or Upper Monocacy Hundred in 1735 and in 1742 signed the petition to di vide Prince George's Parish. He also signed the 1744 petition for a roa d to be laid out from "Tuscarora Creek to Kitoctin Creek." The March Co urt of 1748 (Prince George's County) ordered him to alter the road whic h led to the Ferry at the mouth of the Monocacy River.
