After his death, his widow married Thomas Reynolds o f Anne Arundel County, St. Anne's Parish on November 30, 1699. Sarah Ma ccubin Griffith Reynolds died in 1716.

When Elinor wrote her will in 1705 (probated in 1711) she menti ons "my Dau. Sarah Reynolds." -- Extracted from John Maccubbin of Anne A rundel Co. and His Children, written by Rudolf Loeser. MACCUBBIN, IMMIGRANT. Maccubbin--Howard--(Elinor--). I. Jn. Maccubb in,
the writer's Scotch ancestor, prob. came to Md. in 1659(or 1659-60) , the
yr. in wh. he took up 'Timber Rock' in A. A. Co. Hismarriage, not u ntil 6
yrs later (1665), indicates that he was then ayoung man, b. prob. c 1640.
His will, dated 9.21.1685, proved 7.31.1686 (doubtless the year he
died),names his wf. Ellenor, exec.; four sons (Sam, Wm., Zachariah a nd
Moses, who were under 18 yrs. of age, that is, b. after July 1667), t o
each ofwhom he left 50a. of 'Wordrape' on the north side of South R .; and
hisson John (clearly his eldest son, b. before July, 1667), to whom
hebequeathed, without age restriction, 140 acres, 'Brampton,' on th e
n.side of South R. (Annap. 4.207, as given in Md. Cal., v. 2). No d as.
aregiven in the will, although he had at least 2 das. then living,
viz.,Eliz. (See Sec. 1, Sam Howard's will, 1702-1703), and Sarah (S ec. 1,
willof Jn. Hwd., Sr., 1695-96, and will of Elinor Hwd., 1705-11, be low).
'Old Kent,' 50 yrs. ago, wrote (p. 150) of Nicholas Maccubbin (gd. s on
ofJn.1) that he was 'a Scotchman (called Maccubbin in the Lowlands,
butwhose name in his native Highlands was MacAlpine), who claimed
descentfrom Kenneth II, surnamed MacAlpine, who died in 858, and wh o,
havingunited the Scots and Picts under one sceptre, was the first K ing of
allScotland.' This claim of descent from the royal line of Scotland 's
Kings, who reigned for 25 generations, seems to have been accepted a s
authenticby Md. genealogists (See 'Founders,' 177; Miss Lantz, B. S un,
6.10.1906;'Marylanders of Royal Blood,' B. Sun, 9.23.1906; Col. Fam s.
IV,Maccubbin). Mr. R. R. Griffith, whose genealogy is composed enti rely
ofdescs. of Jn. Maccubbin1 through his da. Sarah, contented himself
withsaying that his Maccubbin forbear was 'a scion of an ancient
Scottishfamily.' It is rather strange that the published 'genealogl es'
are exceptionallyerroneous concerning Jn. Maccubbin's marriage and
children. Thus,'Founder,s,' p. 177: 'Jn. Mccbn. m.1 Susan Howard of S am,
and m. Elinor, who was, as I believe, of the fam. of Dr. Chs. Carrol l and
Jas. Cll. of A. H. Par., both of whom were wss. to her will in 1711 '
(1705). MissLantz, B. Sun, 6.10.1906: 'Jn. Mccbn., Colonist, m.1 Sa rah
Hwd. of Samand had Jn., Zach., Wm., Sam and Moses; m.2 Eleanor, bel ieved
to beCarroll. and had Sarah., thought by descs. of Jn. to have been t he
onlychild by his 2d wife, as the other chn. are named in the will o f
theirgd. fa. Saml. Howard' (only 3 Macubbin chn. are named in this
will).Comes now Col. Fams. IV with the same or similar errors: 'Jn.
Mccbn. m.??Susan Hwd., da. of Saml. Hwd. and Cath. Warner, and had J n.,
Sam., Wm.,Zach., Moses and Eliz.; m.2 Elinor Carroll (conjecture no w
given asfact), and had Sarah, only child by 2d wf.' 'Abridged compe nd of
AmericanGenealogy' [published 1925] has the faults of the above, or w orse
(Seepp. 50, 192, 381). The facts, with proofs, are as follows: (1st ). Jn.
Maccubbin m.1 a da. of Saml. Hwd., by whom he had 3 chn. only,Jn., S aml.,
and Eliz. (will of Saml. Hwd. Sec. 1). (2d). The above sons,Jn. Jr. a nd
Saml., are named in their father's will above: Jn. as thechief
beneficiary, over 18 when the will was made, 9.21.1685; and Saml.,a s
under 18. This proves that Jn. was b. prior to Sep. 21, 1667 (c1666 ),that
Saml., the 2d son, was b. after Sep. 21, 1667 (c1668), and thatEliz ., as
the 3d and last child by 1st wf., was b. about 1669 or 1670(confirm ed by
date of birth of Sarah, the next child, below). (3d). Thesefacts
established, others follow, viz.: That Jn. McC. m. his 1st wife in1 665
(possibly earlier, but not later); That she, if not over 15 or 16
atmarriage, was b. not later than 1650 (c1649), and that her mother
(wifeof Saml. Hwd.) must have been at least 16 yrs. older, that is, b .
c1633(See Sec. 1, Saml. Hwd.). Note--There is no reason to believe t hat
Jn. McCubbin's 1st wf. did notd. before her husband remarried. Henc e,
unless Sam. Hwd. had 2 das. ofthe name Susan, Jn. McC.1 did not m. S usan
Howard, as Susan was living in1702, and is named in her father, Sam l.
Howard's, will of that date. Norwas Jn. McC.'s 1st wf. Sarah Howard o f
Saml., if 'Founders,' p. 70. iscorrect in stating that Sarah m. Pet er
Porter. It is probable that a. da.of Saml. Howard, whose name is un known,
older than Sarah and Susan, wasJn. Maccubbin's 1st wf. She d. soon a fter
the birth of her only da.,Eliz., who, in such case, may well have b een
given the mother's name. Jn. Maccubbin m.2 Elinor(???), who survive d him
and m., as her 2dhusband, Jn. Howard, Sr. (See wills of her husband s).
Sarah Mcbn. was theda. of Jn. and Elinor, and m.1 Wm. Griffith,
immigrant, and m.2 Th.Reynolds (See will of Jn. Hwd., Sr., 1695, in S ec.
1; will of Wm. Gth.,1699, Annap., Book H. fol. 302; will of Elinor H wd.,
1705, below).Sarah's 2d m.--to Th. Reynolds--occurred 11.30.1699 (S t.
Anne .372). Her1st m.--to Wm. Gth.--was in 1687, not later than Jan .
1687-8, as hereldest child, Orlando Gth., was b. 10.21.1688 (See Gt h.
Gen., p. 2).Thus, only 17 yrs. intervened between the birth of Eliz .
(c1670), Jn.Mcbn.'s da. by his 1st wf., and the marriage of Sarah ( 1687),
his da. byhis 2d wf. This means that Jn. Mcbn.'s Howard wife d. c16 70
(the year herlast ch. was born), that he m. his 2d wf. Elinor c1670 -71
(prob. 1671),and had Sarah, b. 1671 or 1672, and only 15 or 16 yrs. o ld
when she m.Wm, Griffith in 1687. Sarah was thus, unmistakably, the e ldest
ch. of Jn.Mcbu. and his 2d wf. Elinor, and his other chn., Wm., Zac h. and
Moseswere b. after Sarah, chn. of Elinor, not of the Howard wife. T he
will of Elinor Howard (11.10.1705--8.4.1711, Annap. 13.205, Md. Cal .3)
leaves to her gd. chn., Orlando, Sophia, Chs. and Wm. Griffith all
herprs. est.; and to Wm. Maccubbin, 'Howard's Thicket,' where he
lives--heto release to his other bro. certain land devised him by h is
father. Thewill appoints Elinor's 'da., Sarah Reynolds,' executrix, a nd
is witnessedby Mary Carroll, Jas. Carroll, Chs. Carroll, Jr., and C hs.
Carroll.Following is from the Rent Roll of A. A. Co., p. 67: 'Good
Mother'sEndeavor, 285 acres, surveyed 4.23.1698, for Elinor Hwd.--5 0
acres partthereof being Howard's Thicket entered, and 50 acres more
entered by thename of The Woodyard--the remainder is surplus. Poss. , Wm.
Maccubbin inright of Elinor Howard'--his mother. Note.--The above
witnesses to Elinor Howard's will of 1705 were beyonddoubt: Mary Ca rroll
(d. 1742). wf. of Atty. Gen. Charles Carroll; Jas.Carroll (d. 1729) a nd
his bro. Chs. Cll. (will 1724), nephews of theAtty. Gen. (Chs, evid ently
signing his name 'Junior' to distinguishhimself from his uncle); an d
lastly Chs. Carroll, the Atty. Gen. himself,Agt. and Receiver Gen. o f
Chs., Lord Baltimore. Chs. Carroll, Atty. Gen.b. 1660, d. 1720; was
admitted to the Inner Temple, London, in 1685;arrived in Md. 10.1.1 688
and m. (w.2) Mary Darnall, da. of Col. Hy.Darnall (Secretary and ki nsman
of Lord Baltimore) and his wf. Eleanor(Hatton) Brooke. They had 10 c hn.,
4 of whom survived the Atty. Gen.,viz., Chs. (1702-1782, father of C hs.
Carroll of Carrollton), Daniel,Mary and Eleanor. His will, dated
12.1.1718, proved 7.28.1720 (Annap.16.176), names, with other 'Kins men,'
Jas. and Chs. Carroll, who weresons of his bro. Anthony (Col. Fams. I I,
Carroll). Dr. Chs. Carroll ofAnnapolis--of another branch of the
illustrious Carroll family--was not awitness of Elinor Howard's wil l of
1705. He was then only 14 yrs. old (b.1691, d. 9.19.1755), had his
medical education to secure, and did notcome to Md. until 'about 17 15'
(Scharf's Hist., v. 2, p. 215). Thus whenElinor Howard made her wil l
(1705), the only known Chs. Carrolls in thiscountry were the Atty. G en.,
his 3-yr.-old son Chs., and his nephew Chs.(d. 1724), bro. of Jas. W hen
Jas. Carroll made his will (2.12. 1728-9,Annap. 19.791) his uncle C hs.
and his bro. Chs. were dead; his 'cousinChs.' (son of the Atty. Gen .) and
his 'cousin Dr. Chs. Carroll' wereappointed his executors. The codi cil of
his will was witnessed by Jn.Welsh (2d), father of Henry O'Neale We lsh,
who later m. Mary Higgins, neice of Jas. Carroll and named in his wi ll
(See Part I, Sec. 4). Much as the writer would be pleased to enroll i n
the list of hisancestors a member of the 'Great House of Ely O'Carr oll,'
the proof isnot forthcoming that Elinor Maccubbin-Howard was Elinor
Carroll of thatfamily. She was in Md. 18 yrs. or more before Atty. G en.
Carroll came, orany others of that fam. (so far as records disclose ).
That the 4 Carrollssigned her will as witnesses is not proof of
relationship: 4 Warfieldswitnessed the will of Maj. Chs. Hammond (1 713),
who was in no way relatedto them or their wives. Nor is the fact th at
Atty. Gen. Chs. named hisda. Elinor, any evidence of relationship t o
Elinor Mcbn. Howard--the da.was evidently named for her gd. mo. Eli nor
Darnall. The future may provethat Elinor Howard was a Carroll, but i t is
not genealogy to state as anactual fact what is now merely a surmis e.
That most trustworthygenealogist, Mr. R. R. Griffith, says in the
Introduction of hisgenealogy: 'A long and patient search of the Col onial
Records has failedto reveal to us the maiden name of and parentage o f
Elinor.' She d.7.10.1711. 2
