BURR, NEWLIN, FOSTER LINE

!Also Duke of Burg. [Desc. of Charlemagne]

!Became fashionable in the late 12th century to claim humble origins. T he counts of Anjou vaunted their own ability by claiming descent from a f orester and overlooking their close marriage ties with leading figures i n the Carolingian nobility; perhaps it helped them feel easier when the y were at war with the king of France. [The Oxford History of Medieval E urope]

!His marriage to Maud/Matilda was but a step in the wonderful history b y which the descendants of a Breton woodman became masters not only of A njou, but of Touraine, Maine, Poitou, Gascony, Auvergne, Aquitaine, and N ormandy and sovereigns at last of the great realm which Normandy had wo n. [WBH - England]

!The hatred between Norman and Angevin had been too bitter to make such a m arriage popular, and the secrecy with which it was brought about was he ld by the barons of England to free them from the oath they had previou sly sworn to support Maud's ascension to the throne. As no baron if he w as sonless could give a husband to his daughter save with his lord's co nsent, the nobles held by a strained analogy that their own assent was n eedful to the marriage of Maud. Henry found a more pressing danger in t he greed of her husband Geoffry, whose habit of wearing the common broo m of Anjou, the plantagenista, in his helmet gave him the title of Plan tagenet. His claims ended at last in intrigues with the Norman nobles, a nd Henry hurried to the border to meet an Angevin invasion; but the plo t broke down at his presence, the Angevins retired, and at the close of 1 135 the old King withdrew to the Forest of Lyons to die. [WBH - England ]

!Extraordinarily good looking, energetic, dashing, with a certain flair t hat lesser lords tried to emulate, although probably no one else could h ave gotten away with wearing in his cap a spring of planta genesta, the c ommon broom plant. Geoffrey married well, even though he detested his c old haughty wife, Matilda was nonetheless the dau. of King Henry of Eng land, and it was through her that he was able to claim Normandy. Howev er, his invasion plans were cut short by a foot wound. [Eleanor of Aqui taine, p. 30]

!By the time Geoffrey was born in 1113, his family counted for relative ly little in the power scheme of France. In fact, Geoffrey's father, F ulk V, thought so little of his inherited fief that, at the age of 40, h e abandoned it to marry Melisend, the heiress of Jerusalem, the title k ing of Jerusalem holding an infinitely greater appeal for Fulk than tha t of count of Anjou. From small beginnings, then, he was able to increa se his heritage by marrying an heiress, a strategy of proven success th at would not be overlooked by his descendants. [Eleanor of Aquitaine, p . 131]

Count of Anjou; Duke of Normandy 1135-1149; m. Empress Matilda; father o f Henry II, king of England. [Falaise Roll, Table IV]

Robert de Sablé, sire de Gacé, revolted against Geoffry in 1136. [Falai se Roll, p. 128]

Outstanding soldier; espoused Matilda, dau. of Henry I, king of the Eng lish, and widow of the German emperor Henry V. [Plantagenet Chronicles, p . 38]

Energetic soldier, shrewd in his upright dealings, exceptionally well e ducated, generous to all, tall in stature, handsome and red-headed. Bec ame count of Anjou in 1129 after his father, Fulk V, had gone to Jerusa lem. Married Matilda when he was 15 and she was 26. [Plantagenet Chroni cles, pp. 45-7]

Count of Anjou, Duke of Normandy; 2nd husband of Matilda of England; fa ther of Henry II, king of England. [Ancestral Roots, p. 3]

Father of Hamelin. [GRS 3.03, Automated Archives, CD#100]

Son of Foulques V le Anjou and Ermengarde, Countess of Maine; m. Matild a/Maud, Princess of England. [WFT Vol 4 Ped 3168]

Called "Geoffrey the Handsome".

Founder of the Plantagenet dynasty. He was said to be tall, handsome, g raceful and strong. In 1128, aged 15, he was married to Matilda, dau/he iress of Henry I of England and the widow of the Holy Roman Emperor Hen ry V. They disliked each other, but maintained an uneasy political alli ance and produced three sons, Henry (the future Henry II, king fo Engla nd), Geoffrey and William.
Geoffrey spent much of his youth imposing order on his unruly vassal s, including his own brother Elias, count of Maine, who rebelled agains t him in 1131; Geoffrey captured Elias and held him prisoner at Tours. E lias died soon after his release from a disease contracted in prison. I n 1135 Henry I died, and Matilda's cousin Stephen of Blois seized the E nglish throne, together with Normandy, traditionally coveted by the cou nts of Anjou. Geoffrey laid claim t the duchy in his wife's right.
Between 1135-8, Geoffrey launched four expeditions into Normandy, no ne of which achieved great success. The expedition mounted in 1137 was s tricken by dysentery, and forced to return swiftly to Anjou. In 1139 Ma tilda invaded England, seeking to press her claim to the English throne , and Geoffrey remained in Anjou to continue the war against Normandy. T he Norman barons opposed Geoffrey, not through loyalty to Stephen, who h ad only visited Normandy once, but out of hatred of their traditional e nemy, Anjou. However, Norman morale was weakened when Matilda captures S tephen at Lincoln in 1141, and many castles surrendered to Geoffrey, le aving him in control of most of the lands between Bayeux and the Seine. I n 1142 he took the Avranchine and Mortain, and in 1143 moved east of th e Seine, overrunning the Cotentin. He was invested as duke of Normandy i n 1144 after the fall of Rouen, and Arques, the last castle opposing hi m, capitulated in 1145, leaving him unchallenged master of Normandy.
After the conquest of Normandy, Geoffrey joined Louis VII of France o n the abortive Second Crusade (1147-9), returning in 1149. In 1150 he c eded Normandy to his son Henry, who also inherited the family claim t t he English throne. Geoffrey died on 7 Sep 1151, and was buried in Le Ma ns Cathedral: the founder of a great dynasty of kings through his son, H enry II of England. [The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 84]
