Commentary
Possible relative: Siward, earl of Northumbria.
Suthen's name is known only from one of the Scottish king lists ("Regna l List I"), which gives the name of the mother of Malcolm III in an int erlined addition [KKES 284]. ESSH 1: 596 cites the late fourteenth cent ury Scottish historian John of Fordun [iv, 44] as stating that Duncan h ad married a kinswoman of Siward of Northumbria. Given Siward's support o f Malcolm, that is plausible enough, but there does not appear to be an y justification for attempts to define a more specific relationship bet ween Suthen and Siward.

Macbeth siezed the throne of Scotland in 1040 after defeating and k illing Duncan I near elgin. He based his claim to the crown on his wife 's royal descent (Duncan's former wife Sybal). Malcolm III, son of Dunc an I, and Earl Siward of Northumberland defeated Macbeth at Dunsinane i n 1054, but they did not dethrone him. Three years later, Malcolm III k illed Macbeth at Lumphanan. Macbeth's stepson Lulach reigned for a few m onths, and then Malcolm III succeeded him as king.
William Shakespeare based his play, Macbeth, one of his greatest tr agedies, upon a distorted version of these events which he found in Rap hael Holinshed's 'Chronicle of Scottish History.' The only kernel of hi storical truth in the play is Duncan's death at the hand of Macbeth. Fr om this fact, Shakespeare drew his portrait of ambition leading to a vi olent and tragic end.

Duncan I of Scotland
Duncan I (Donnchad mac Crínáin) (died August 15 1040) was a son of Crin an the Thane de Mormaer, lay abbot of Dunkeld, and Princess Bethoc of S cotland. He became King of the Scots in succession to his maternal gran dfather Malcolm II in 1034, having previously ruled as rex Cumbrorum in S trathclyde. His accession is said to be "the first example of inheritan ce of the Scottish throne in the direct line".
Duncan was known as "Duncan The Gracious", a title that was not entirel y complimentary. His uncaring approach to matters of state made him unp opular both with his subjects and the nobility. Not a strong ruler, he i s chiefly known today through his connection with Macbeth, which has be en immortalized by Shakespeare. The feud between these two princes orig inated probably in a dispute over the succession to the throne; its det ails, however, are obscure, and the only fact which can be stated with a ny certainty is that Duncan was slain in battle by Macbeth, near Elgin i n Morayshire on August 15, 1040.
In 1039, Duncan marched south to besiege Durham, but was defeated with h eavy losses. He also attempted to seize control of Moray, but was twice d efeated by the Earl of Orkney's son, Thorfinn, before being killed in b attle. He was killed at Bothnguane and buried at Iona.
Details of Duncan's marital life are a matter of debate among historian s. The Scottish Regnal List I calls her Suthen, and John of Fordun call s her a kinswoman of Siward Biornsson, Earl of Northumbria. The United K ingdom's official History of the Monarchy states that she was Siward's c ousin.
Two of Duncan's sons, Malcolm III Canmore and Donald Bane, were afterwa rds kings of the Scots.
