DIVORCE DATE: 18 MAR 1152 (CHURCH ANNULMENT).

!King of France 1137-80. Marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine was annulled o n grounds of consanguinity in 1152. [Funk & Wagnalls]

NEWLIN, FOSTER LINE

!Son of Louis VI and Adelaide of Marienne; father of Philippe II; m. 3. A lix of Champagne. [Ped. of Charlemagne, Vol. I, p. 64]

!As a younger son he had been groomed for the Church. Married at 16 to E leanor of Aquitaine, he was undoubtedly overwhelmed and uncomfortable w ith the worldliness of Eleanor's lifestyle. He would never understand h er, but from the first, he had adored her in the way an inexperienced b oy worships a gay, confident girl; with passionate admiration he respon ded to her charm, to a cleverness that he himself lacked, and he indulg ed her extravagantly. Louis had absolutely no sense of military intui tion and his invasion of Toulouse was a farce when he cut and ran. [Ele anor of Aquitaine, pp. 38-40]

!Rousing himself from post-divorce lethargy, Louis set off on a pilgrim age to St. James of Compostela. Ostensibly a religious expedition, it w as also for the purpose of inspecting the daughter of the king of Casti le as a possible bride. Evidently Constance, a sober maiden who bore n o resemblance in personality or looks to Eleanor, passed his scrutiny, f or Louis returned to Paris betrothed. [Eleanor, p. 164]

!Louis proposed to King Henry II that he partition his empire among his t hree oldest sons: the counties of Anjou and Maine to Prince Henry, not q uite 14, and then the boy might do homage to Louis for his lands; likew ise Richard should receive the duchy of Aquitaine; and Geoffrey the duc hy of Brittany on the same
basis. To sweeten the pot, Louis offered to give Richard the hand of A lais, his dau by Constance of Castile. Henry failed to see through thi s thinly veiled divide and conquer strategy. This was all finalized on t he feast of
Epiphany, January 6, 1169 at Montmirail on the border of Maine near Cha rtres. [Eleanor of Aquitaine, p. 243]

!At 59, Louis was beginning to feel the weight of his years and determi ned that he should proceed with the coronation of Philip. Shortly befo re the coronation was to take place, Philip and his friends went out to h unt in the forest. Philip became hopelessly lost, panicked, but finally s tumbled upon a charcoal burner's home. When he was returned to his fat her, he fell ill with a fever and he was not expected to live. Louis d etermined that if Philip lived, he would make a pilgrimage to Becket's t omb. Philip lived and the coronation was scheduled for All Saint's Day , Nov 1, but King Louis, laboring under old age and a paralytic malady, w as unable to attend the coronation; for after he had returned from Engl and and was staying at Saint-Denis, he was struck by a sudden
chill, had an attack of paralysis and lost the use of the right side of h is body (stroke). He died on Sept. 18, 1180 in Paris. William of Newbu rgh said, "He was a man of warm devotion to God and of great gentleness t o his subjects and of notable reverence for the clergy, but he was rath er more simple-minded than is becoming to a prince." [Eleanor, pp. 282- 3]
