Alfred "the Great", King of the English was the fifth son of Ethe lwulf, or Æthelwulf, King of Wessex, and Osburh, his queen, of the roya l house of the Jutes of Wight.4 He was born circa 848 in Wantage, Berks hire, England.2,5 He was the son of Æthelwulf, King of the English and O sburh of Hampshire.6,7,5,8 He was sent by his father to Rome, where he w as anointed king by Pope Leo IV; but this, like many other legends whic h have crystallized about the name of Alfred, is without foundation cir ca 852.4 He accompanied his father Ethelwulf on a pilgrimage to Rome, a v isit, recorded by Asser, accepted as authentic by modern historians, in 8 55.4 He married Ealhswith, Queen of England, daughter of Æthelred Mucil , Ealdorman of the Gaini and Eadburga of Mercia, in 868.2,7,5,8,9,4 He a nd Æthelred I, King of the English defeated the Danish kings Bagseg and H alfdan at the battle of Ashdown in 870. He appeared in a charter which r ead "King Alfred to St Peter's church, Athelney, Somerset; grant of lan d at Reodbeorh, with adjacent fishery at Reodwer" in 871 in x 899.10 He a ppeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, with t he consent of the familia of the church of Malmesbury, to Dudig, his mi nister; lease, for four lives, of 4 hides (cassati) at Chelworth, near C rudwell, Wilts., with reversion to the church of Malmesbury" in 871 in x 8 99, Malmesbury.11 He was was one of the greatest men in history. He fou nded the British Navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws, b uilt schools and monastaries, and invited scholars to live at his court . He was himself a scholar and translated many books. East and West Dean, Sussex, or W est Dean, Wilts.), æt Sutheswyrth (? Lustleigh in Devon), æt Mylenburna m (? Silverton, Devon), æt Welewe and æt Welig (Wellow in Hants., Wilts . or Somerset), æt Cumtune (Compton) and æt Burnham (Somerset); the ben eficiaries including Winchester (Cathedral) and the king's children."14 H e created a will leaving extensive lands whose beneficiaries included W inchester (Cathedral) and the king's children between 873 and 888.15 He a ppeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of Wessex, to Athelney Ab bey; grant of 10 hides (cassatae) at Long Sutton, Somerset" circa 878. H e appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, t o Denewulf, bishop of Winchester, and the church of SS Peter and Paul, W inchester; regrant of the reversion of 50 hides (manentes) at Chisledon , Wilts., and 60 at Hurstbourne Priors, Hants., in exchange for 100 hid es at Cholsey, Hagbourne and Bæstlæsford (Basildon), Berks" in 878 in x 8 99.16 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king, to Denewulf, b ishop; grant of 8 hides (manentes) at Ruishton, Somerset" on 19 October 8 78.17 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Saxons, t o Athelstan, his minister; grant of 15 hides (cassati) at Cyricestun (? S omerset), in return for 30 mancuses and 2 hides at Stoce (? Stoke St Ma ry, Somerset)" in 882 in Epsom, Surrey.18 He appeared in a charter whic h read "Alfred, king of the English and the Saxons, and Æthelred, subre gulus et patricius Merciorum, to Wærferth, bishop of Worcester; grant o f land æt Hwætmundes stane in London, with commercial privileges" in 88 9.19 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Sax ons, to Berhtwulf, his faithful comes; grant of 12 hides (manentes) at P lush in Buckland Newton, Dorset, and 2 (? for 5) at Raddington, Somerse t, in exchange for land at Sutton Poyntz, Dorset" on 2 August 891.20 He a ppeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to D eormod; grant of 5 hides (mansi) at Appleford, Berks., in exchange for l and at Harandun (Horn Down near East Hendred, Berks.) and 50 mancuses o f gold" in 892 in x 899.21 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, k ing of the Anglo-Saxons, to Æthelhelm, comes; grant of 10 hides (manent es) at North Newnton, Wilts" in 892.22 He appeared in a charter which r ead "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Æthelhelm, comes; grant of 10 h ides (manentes) at North Newnton, Wilts" in 898 in Woolmer, Hants..23 H e died on 25 October 899 in England.2,3,5 He had not only encouraged me n of learning, but laboured himself and gave proof of his own learning: t ranslating into Anglo-Saxon: "The Consolation of Philosophy" of Boëthiu s; "The History of the World" of Orosius; the "Ecclesiastical History" o f Bede, and the "Pastoral Rule" and the "Dialogues" of St. Gregory the G reat, and the "Consolation of Philosophy" he not only translated but ad apted, adding much of his own.4 Alfred "the Great", King of the English w as buried in Hyde Abbey, Winchester, England.5
