Notes for William Bryson:
[15feb06abernethy.ged]
Thad Bryson, the family hostorian and only four generations removed fr om this ancestor, stated that William Bryson 2nd, returned to from Sout h Carolina to Haywood Co., settled in the vicinity of Barbers Orchard a nd is buried on Richnond Creek. He mentioned six sons: William, Samue l, John, Andrew, James and Daniel, and only one daughter who married an A rmstrong and settled in South Carolina.
On Oct. 3, 1763 Alexander Osborn for 40 lbs., sold to William Bryson 55 4 acres on Back Creek, a branch of Catawba River, Eastside, about 5 mil es below Oliphant's mill adjacent John McCullough. On March 22, 1765, W illiam Bryson and wife Isabel of Rowan Co., NC sold for 44 lbs. 300 acr es on Back Creek of Catawba River to John Bryson, wit. George Davidson, J ohn Clark, signed William Bryson, Isabell Bryson and on 22 of November , 1788, William Bryson, Sr. of Rowan Co., NC sold 254 acres in Iredell C o., NC on Back Creek , a branch of Catawba River whereon the said Willi am Bryson, Sr. then lived, part of the tract granted to Alexander Osbor n, Jan.9, 1761 and afterward made over 2nd of October, 1763, to William B ryson, now sold for 20 lbs. to James Porter, wit. Lemuel Clayton, ref. R owan Co., NC deed book 5, pg. 307; bk 6 p.222; Iredell Co. deed book A p g. 99. Isabell may have died between 1770-1788 since she failed to sig n the deed of 1788.
From Marty Gant:
Sometime before or during 1763, the Brysons left PA and moved to the (t hen) frontier regions of Rowan Co, North Carolina. On 2 Oct 1763 Willia m Bryson purchased 554 acres on Back Creek (modern Iredell County) from A lexander Osborne. (Rowan Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 370).
On 21 Mar 1765 William Bryson and his wife "Izabel" sold 300 acres of t he above to John Bryson. Many assume that was their son John Bryson, bu t I personally think it was an elder John Bryson who may be William's b rother. (Rowan Co, NC Deed Book 6 page 221).
The 1778 Rowan Co, NC Taxlist shows William Bryson listed in Captain Da vidson's company.
On 22 Nov 1788 William Bryson "Sr" sold his remaining 254 acres on Back C reek to James Porter. Since his wife Isabell didn't sign this deed, she m ay have been deceased, but not necessarily so. (Iredell Co, NC Deed Bo ok A page 99).
Around the time of the above deed, William (and Isabell, if still livin g) left Back Creek and joined their children down in Pendleton Dist, SC ( now Anderson Co, SC). William was listed on the 1790 census in Pendleto n next to his sons Andrew and Daniel Bryson:
1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of thi s census)
1790 Ninety-Six District, Pendleton Co, SC pg 82 William Brison 1-0-3-0 -0
Analysis:
1 Male 16 and Up (before 1774) William BRYSON (c1720)
3 Females no ages given (before 1790) Isabella HOLMES Bryson wife
Unknown daughter (or granddaughter)
Unknown daughter (or granddaughter)
The three women with William in 1790 are probably his wife Isabell, and t wo unknown daughters (or granddaughters).
William was not found on the 1800 census, nor any other record for him f ound after 1790. He and Isabell probably died in the 1790's in Pendleto n Dist, SC. It is possible that they went with some of their children i nto Western NC in the 1790's, and died there instead. William left no W ill nor Estate records, nor any other "official" document naming his ch ildren.
Besides the above, most of what we know of William and Isabell's family i s based on family records and traditions written down two or three gene rations later. Their movements from Lancaster Co, PA to Rowan Co, NC to P endleton Dist, SC is established by the Pension record of their son Sam uel Bryson. (See Samuel Bryson)
In a Family record written before 1898 by Talitha Bryson Allen (grandda ughter of James Holmes Bryson, son of William and Isabella) she stated t hat James, Daniel and Andrew Bryson were brothers. She mentioned that t he family came from the province of Ulster in Ireland to PA, and later s ettled in Anderson District, SC. She stated all three brothers served i n the American Army during the Revolution.
Thomas Clingman Bryson wrote in another Family Record (written before 1 940) that the brothers were James, William, Daniel, Andrew and John, an d that they were sons of William Bryson and a Miss Holmes. They came fr om Ireland to Lancaster Co, PA then to SC and NC.
Another Family Record written by Frank L. Bryson (1890-?) mentioned all s ix brothers: John, Sam, Daniel, Andrew, James Holmes and William. He al so stated that William Bryson was an Irishman, and that his mother was f rom Scotland, and that William married a Miss Holmes of Lancaster Co, P A.
All of the above information was based on family tradition and intervie ws with family members. It seems to establish fairly well that William B ryson and Isabella Holmes were the parents of James Holmes Bryson, John B ryson, William M. Bryson, Andrew Bryson, Samuel Bryson, and Daniel H. B ryson. The data also seems to agree that the Brysons came from Ireland t o Lancaster Co, PA then to Rowan Co, NC, later to SC and western NC.

"James BRYSON, Daniel BRYSON and Andrew BRYSON. These three Bryson brot hers are believed to have emigrated from the Province of Ulster in Irel and to Pennsylvania, and from there they came southward. They settled i n Anderson District (now county), South Carolina. They must have settle d in Anderson District before the Revolutionary War of 1776. All three o f the brothers were in the American Army. At one time they were in a ba ttle with the British forces very near their own home, and after the fi ghting was over, the wife of James BRYSON went out to the battlefield t o see if her husband or brothers were killed, looking at the faces of t he dead; fortunately they were not hurt. This fact obtained from Mrs. T alitha ALLEN, sister of Daniel BRYSON, near Sylva, Jackson Co, NC.
These three BRYSON brothers moved from South Carolina in 1799 to Wester n North Carolina and settled in Richland Valley on Richland Creek, in w hat is now Haywood County, a few miles from Waynesville.
The names of the four daughters were Ibby, who married an ARMSTRONG in A nderson District, SC and remained there when the family moved to NC. Pe ggy married a WOODS and lived in North Carolina. Betsy married a GABBY a nd lived in NC. Sallie married a HICKY first, and then a GROSS and live d in NC.

The following was written by Thomas Clingman Bryson. He was born 1 Mar 1 851 and died 8 Nov 1940. The date of this document is unknown, but was w ritten before 1940. My copy of the following was already t yped and could have been edited or added to before I got it.

All fought through the Revolutionary War and came out alive. (They c laimed he had gone from England to Ireland). Of the sons, it seems; Jam es; William; Daniel; Andrew; and John settled in Western North Carolina a nd upper South Carolina.
