TENTH GENERATION

704. Richard Towner (53) was born in 1650 in Sussex County, England.(53) (54) He was the son of Thomas Towner and Mary Page of Sussex County, England. He died on 22 Aug 1727 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT. A tradition related in the towns of Oxford, Haddam and Killingworth, CT, by his descendants, is that he was impressed into the British Navy from the Isle of Man. After some years of service, he was put ashore on the American coast at Savannah, GA, to die from yellow fever which he had contracted. However, he survived and married his nurse, Mary, and from their they went to Charleston, SC, and engaged in the grocery business. In order to escape a threatened bombardment from a Spanish man-of-war, he and others provisioned a small vessel from his store, and sailed north to Branford, CT. He settled in the town of Guilford, CT on or about February 17, 1686. He lived in Guilford, CT some three years and moved to Branford, CT where there is a recorded land sale to him dated May 27, 1689. He was married to Mary Unknown -Towner in 1686 in Savannah, Georgia.

705. Mary Unknown -Towner died before 1716/17 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT.(55)(56) Richard Towner married his second wife, Deborah Crane, on March 6, 1716/17 in Haddam, New Haven, CT. Children were:

child i. Richard Towner was born on 28 Sep 1695 in Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. He died on 28 Feb 1753 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT.
child ii. Sarah Towner was born in 1700 in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. She died on 31 May 1718 in Wallingford, New Haven Co, CT.
child iii. John Towner was born about 1702 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT. He died about 1742 in Derby, New Haven Co., CT.
child iv. Joseph Towner was born about 1704 in Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. He died about 1725 in Derby, New Haven Co., CT.
child v. Benjamin Towner was born in 1688 in Guilford, New Haven Co., CT. He died on 9 Jan 1761 in Killingworth, Middlesex Co., CT.
child vi. Hannah Towner was born in 1709 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT. She died in 1759.

child viii. Thankful Towner was born in 1710 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT. She died in 1758.
child ix. Mary Towner was born about 1707 in Branford, New Haven Co., CT. He died before 1782.
