4. Daniel McDowell (5) was born on 23 Nov 1763 in Hamilton, PA. With this generation, the family surname changed from "Mac" to "Mc". He died on 28 Nov 1806 in Chemung Valley, Tioga Co., NY. Daniel McDowell accompanied the Buck and Wynkoop pioneers up the river
and settled Chemung County, NY in 1786.

He was married to Ruth Drake after 1786 in Chemung Valley, NY.

Captain McDowell survived capture by the Iroquois in 1782, including a run through a gantlet where twenty-four prisoners had died before him. During this, he received a tomahawk wound to his shoulder and was nick named the "Iron Man" by the Indians. After the wound healed, he returned to Pennsylvania. In 1786 he accompanied the Buck and Wynkoop pioneers up the river and they formed the first settlement at Chemung Valley known later as Elmira, Chemung, Co., NY. Ruth Drake was born on 21 May 1776. She died on 23 Jan 1854. Daniel McDowell and Ruth Drake had the following children:

child+23 ix. Alexander Addison McDowell.
