Married at the home of Jesse Maynard (her Father) by Minister James
Queen. Moved to Maynard Branch of Twelve Pole Creek and raised all
his children there except his oldest daughter who was born at Peach Orchard on Greasy Ridge. When Mary died he married Nancy pack. He had a very productive farm through hard work and much diligence. He always had a desire to go back to Ohio where
the land was flat. He had a seed potato called the Sanders Adkins
Potato. The seed is now extinct. He and his first wife (Mary) are burried
on this farm with three of his chirldren. There is a sixth unknown grave at this location. We have a memorial meeting there once a year on the 1st Sunday of September.
Uncle Jesse related to me that Grandad Sanders bought the first factory made wagon in the McComas area of Twelve Pole Creek. He had to go to Ft. Gay West Va. and cutting the trail as he came home.

large stock of groceries and produce, and contemplates adding a stock
of dry goods and notions.
Mr. Adkins and Mary E. DeFoe were married August, 1860. She was born in Wayne County, West Virginia in March, 1840. They have the following children: Sanders A., resides in West Virginia; Sarah Ann (Thompson), resides in Ironton; Saletha J. (Moore)

In the 1880 census, the Thomas ADKINS family is found living on Fourth Street, which is in the 3rd ward of Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio enumeration district 90, page 24, lines 27-33, family 241, enumerated June 15, 1869. Thomas is the 42 year old white male head of household, married, a teamster gy profession, who was born in West Virginia, as were both of parents. Mary Ellen is the 40 year old white female wife, married who cannot write, and was born in Virginia, as were her parents. In column 2, page 4, lead item, of THE DAILY SENTINEL, Wellston, Ohio, Monday December 16, 1912, the following article appears: "DEATH - came as a thief in the Night to Thomas ADKINS, - AN OLD GENTLEMAN - Had eaten an Apple Probably Causing Acute Indigestion -- Death came as a thief in the night to Thomas ADKINS, an old gentleman residing with Mr. and Mrs. David Thompson of Pilgys Knob about two o'clock this morning. He had been feeling ill all day but had not experienced any dangerous symptons. However after eating a hearty supper he ate an aple which caused him to have cramps. After eating this he went to church and returned home. He kept getting worse and a doctor was called. The doctor did not seem to think that he was in dangerous condition but he sank rapidly, dying early this morning. He was about seventy years of age, hale and hearty. Mrs. THOMPSON is one of his two children, and he made his home with her a great part of the time. His other child, a son William of Coal Grove whom he also spent part of the time with. Besides his two children, he has several grandchildren. Although as old as he was, he was,a great chruch worker.Always while in this city he attended Wills Chapel church, in either rain or shine. He was loved and respected by members of that congregation and was also a great favorite of the children residing on the Knob. He was a thoroughly lovable old gentleman and he will be sadly missed by his relatives and friends. He is a Lawrence Countian and was raised in or near Ironton. His wife has been dead for several years. No arrangements for the funeral services or burial have been made but they will be made this evening. In column 3, page 4, second item, THE DAILY SENTINEL, Wellston, Ohio, Tuesday, December 17, 1912, the following item appears: "FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETE -- The Funeral Services of Thomas ADKINS, who died Monday morning at the home of David THOMPSON, will be held at Wills Chapel, Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. In column 4, item 2, page 1, THE WELLSTON TELEGRAM, Wellston, Ohoio, Wednesday, December 18, 1912, the following item is found.: "DEATH CAME SUDDENLY -- Thomas ADKINS After Spending Day at Church Drops Dead -- After only a few hours illness from acute indigestion, Thomas ADKINS, an aged resident of West Wellston, passed away early Monday morning, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. David THOMPSON on Pilgey's Knob. Mr. ADKINS was a devout church worker and had attended services at Wills Chapel all day Sunday. After arriving home sunday evening, he ate an apple, and soon after became violently ill with cramps. A physician was called, who relieved him and the aged man went to sleep. The family down stairs and about four o;clock in the morning, htey a fall and rushing up stairs they found him lying on the floor dead, the exertion of trying to get ofut of bed, having proved too much for his weakened heart. Mr. ADKINS was weventy five years old and came here from Lawrence county a number of years ago to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. THOMPSON. He is survived by four children, Mrs THOMPSON, Mrs. Jane MOORE, of Rock Camp, Wm. ADKINS of Ironton and Sanders of Ethel, W. Va. The funeralwas held at Wills Chapel today and burial was at Hamden. Those from a distance who came in attendence were the aged man son, William of Ironton and his grandchildren Miss Myrtle THOMPSON of Chillicothe, Mrs. Ray Keplinger of Greenfield, Arthur THOMPSON of Colimbus and Mr. and Mrs. Henry THOMPSON and son Lawrence of Jacksonville." the certificate of death, state of Ohio, Bureau of Vital Statistics record for Thomas G. ADKINS was received 23 Jan 1993. the place of death is given as Wellston, Jackson County, at 2 a.m. on Dec. 16, 1912 due to "heart failure - He dropped dead" with the contributory condition of "acute indigestion from eating a apple" of 6 hours duration. He is described as a white male, born May 19. 1838, aged 74 years, 6 months, 27 days, widowed, born in West Virginia,and a teamster by occupation. Information on his parents is unknown. He was buried in Hamden Cemetery on December 18, 1912. A.B. LEACH of Wellston was the undertaker. The informant for the certificate was Cavid THOMPSON, wellston. The Registration District No. is 8268, and the tegistered No. is 123.

Thomas is reported to buried in Hamden Cemetery, but an extensive search of the cemetery we failed to faind a headstone.
