 Includes NotesNotes for Berto Agang:
In the 1850's the Philippines was still a colony of Spain. Rizal was born in 1861. The Church at that time was run by Spanish priests. And there was an ongoing estrangement of relationship between the natives and the colonizers.

It was said that the surname of "Berto" originally was not "Agang". But one day one of their relatives at that time was accused of having killed a priest in Carmen Cebu. This accusation caused the relatives to escape from the misplaced anger of the colonizers at that time. Berto was one of those who sailed away from Carmen Cebu putting unto himself a new surname, the one we have now, and settled in the province of Biliran. And there in Biliran got to multiply himself....It is said also that the name Berto is possibly a shortened form of either the name Norberto, Alberto or Roberto.
