Daniel Scannell (son of John Scannell and Mary Lane) was born November 11, 1868 in Tredegar, South Wales, and died July 29, 1940 in Tredegar, South Wales. He married Ellen Hogan on May 25, 1892 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Tredegar.

 Includes NotesNotes for Daniel Scannell:
Daniel Scannell on 1891 UK Census:

Daniel was 22 living at 8 George Street, Tredegar, with his parents and sister, Johanna, and brother, John. The census stated that he was a fireman, however, this was more probably "furnace man" in the iron works.

Per Bernadette: "Dan was in America before he was married to Ellen, the story is he came back to Tredegar to take his parents to America, met Ellen, where she worked as a barmaid and fought another
suitor up on the mountain for her, he won and the rest is our history. John and Mary never got to America and never really welcomed Ellen in to the family."

On 1901 UK Census:

Daniel (32) was living with his wife Ellen (nee Hogan) (30) at 11 Carpenters Yard. They had three children Margaret (6), William (4), and Helena (6 mo). Helena must have died in childhood as there is no mention of her again.

I have received correspondence from Daniel's great-granddaughter, Bernadette Wheeler, for this branch of the family. She stated that Dan went to America. I am still researching this info as I have not found him through Ellis Island or on US census. Bernadette stated "Dan was definitely in America with Ned/Edward and did work in the steel works.

Bernadette stated that Dan won a prize of 5 pounds from the "John Bull" magazine when he wrote an essay all abou the "Bessamer Furnace."

Daniel and Ellen lived at 4 Hill Street, Tredegar, Gwent at the time of Daniel's death.

Carpenters Yard next to Pond Row on 1901 UK Census.

From a letter from Eileen Desmond..."Yes, you did meet the grand-daughter-in-law of Daniel Scannell when you came to mass in Tredegar. She came over from the other side of the church.....and said she was one of the Scnnells (Sheilas) Her only child (I've forgotten her name) was not with her, she's around the same age as Michael and Paul Desmond. She married Dan's son William's son Daniel who died young a few years ago. As a coincidence, Sheila's younger siste Monica married Michael O'Leary, and they have the parents of the Michael who is researching Tredgar Church Records. Monica died young quite a few years ago." This info has to many shes and hers...very confusing!
