There is a conflict with birth certificate dates. The original from the GRO states 1/19/1873...however apparently the birth records from church states 12/29/1873 with baptism taking place on 1/5/1874?? Parents John & Mary nee Lane with William Williams, Priest. On John's marriage certificate he states that he was born on 12/29/1872. So go figure!

John was referred to as Uncle Jack.

from family history: John came to States from Wales but went back with brother Edward/Ned and left wives here in Pittsburgh. Edward's sons went to wales to bring their father back but John stayed there.

Born at Bedwelty, Monmouthshire. Resided at Bedwelty. Employed by Mr. Abraham of Tredegar as an iron worker. Attested for the Militia March 20, 1890 aged 17 years 4 months. Served in G company.

Sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour for being absent from traning in 1897 (married Ellen O'Neill in USA!) and 1898 (birth of son, John!).

Embodied January 23, 1900; Volunteered for Overseas Active Service and embarked for South Africa February 14, 1900; Embarked for England March 24, 1903 time expired. (ref PRO WO96/465). Queen's South Africa Medal clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal(ME35).

from Gertrude Gordon letter: John and Ned "Edward" went back to Wales to get rid of the property and they were drafted into the army, can't remember which war. Then they didn't come back. William and Thomas (Edward's sons) went to wWales when they got older and brought their father (Ned/Edward) back John stayed there. John never did see his father, John.
