Includes NotesNotes for Richard Pierce Alvin:
Richard was born in Vauxhall, which is an area within the parish of Lambeth, situated just south of the River Thames in central London. In the 1851 Census he is shown as a widower living at 19 Lower East, Smithfield, in the Borough of Tower hamlets, with his children Thomas, Frances, Louisa and Joseph. His trade is shown as a brewer's agent. In his will he describes himself as a Brewer. Living with the family was a female servant, Martha Linch. He left a will made out in 1856. This document is quite extensive and has been transcribed for easier reading. The figures mentioned in his will suggest that he was a man of means (Figures meantioned in the will ie 250 pounds in 1857 would be worth $A12, 045 today (2004).

An 1830 map of London shows Lower East Smithfield being about a kilometer to the east of The Tower of London. It ran south east from where Burr CLose is today and parallel to the River Thames. The whole area was redeveloped to create the London and St. Katherine Docks, these in turn were severely damaged during World War II, so nothing would remain that could be recognised from when Richard and his family lived there. On the same map is shown The Red Lion Brewhouse. On Richard's death certificate it states that he was a clerk with Hoares Woodbridge & Co, who owned The Red Lion Brewhouse at the time. So he lived next door to his workplace. The cause of death shown on his death certificate is described as "Congestion of the Brain", a condition he had suffered from three months prior to his death. As such there is no specific condition; doctors of the day, not being able to specify exactly what had killed their patients, would often attribute their death to vague causes. This description is frequently used and, when an elderly person is involved, would probably be a stroke.
Maria Elizabeth was present at his death, at this point we are not sure who she is, she is shown as living at West Smithfield.
