William Smith II (son of Robert Smith Jr. and Grace Braithwaite) was born August 21, 1787 in Near Schnectady, New York, and died February 13, 1880 in Galva, Illinois, Lynn Township, Knox County. He married Lorenda Badger on December 11, 1809 in Marathon, Courtland County, New York..

William Smith II, and his wife Lorenda Badger Smith in the early spring of 1844
came over-land to Illinois by Prairie Schooner {Covered Wagon}, bringing with
them 6 sons and 2 daughters, 1 son-in-law and 4 grandchildren, and outhers to
make up a party of thirty. They first landed in what is now Chicago, Illinois.
It was then nothing more than swamp land and noted as a fishing place on the
Lakes, with few bussiness here and there, but amoung them was a lumber business,
and as they landed there they reloaded their wagons so as to have one empty wagon.
He purchased a load of lumber in the settelment, knowing that some where he intended
to build a home, and he would the lumber as soon as he could establish a place on
whinch to build his home.
This load of lumber was brought overland with them. That year was known as the wet
year, and the Mississippi River was higher than it ever was before. They had a terrible
time getting through. When they reached the sight of present of the old Home Lynn
Township, Knox County, Illinois and viewed the lovely landscape, and still unbroken
by the plow, and considered the condition of the roads, William resolved that he would
go no further, and if he could secure a title to that land he would settel.
The sight was located on the old St.Louis and Chicago Highway over which many indians
traveled. The date was June 19, 1844. at once one member of the family proceeded to
Quincy, Illinois the nearest land office to secure a clear title, while the remainder of
the family started improvements.
They marketed wheat in Chicago, driving driving there with wagons. They marketed livestock
in Peoria, Illinois, for years makeinf the trips wagons. At the time of their arrival here,where
the City of Galesburg, Illinois noe staands as well as the City of Galva, Illinois, there were
vast forests and prairies and they hunted deer were those Cities are now located.
The first buildings, some logs were used to build with, the next set of buildings the family
built, , lumber was used from saw mill of William B. Smith 4th child of William and Lorenda
Smith, who owned and operated a saw mill and lumber yard at LaFayette, Illinois, south of

Galva, Illinois at Goshen Township, Stark County 6 miles away.
The fram was first known as Cotton Wood Farm, because of the many cottonwood trees.
Later the cotton wood trees were replaced by many Maples, thus the name was changed to
Acer Place, by which it is still known today. It is located 6 miles south of Galva, Illinois,
Lynn Township, Knox County, and as of 1967 it has ben in the Smith Family for four Generations.William and lorenda Badger Smith were the parents of 11 children all born in
Marathon, Cortland County, New York.
