Heman Powers Smith was a boy of 10 years of age, and the youngest of a family of 11 children, 8 of them living and coming with their parents to settle in Illinois, on section 27 in what is now Lynn Toenship, Knox County.
As a boy he had but ordinary opportunities for schooling. However, when he finished country school,
he decided to try for still greater advantages of study, and decided to enter college. He chose Beloit
College, at Beloit, Wisconsin. He rode there on horse back, kept his horse there and several times
during the school year made the trip back and forth to his home in Illinois, on his horse.
Soon after his return from Beloit he enlisted on August 9, 1862 at Altona, Illinois, in Company G. of the 89th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, under Thomas Whiting, and served nearly 4 years in the Civil War. He took part in all the Battle engagements of his company, and was in 15 major battles.
For three years he served in the Army of the Cumberland, which was commanded General William T.
Sherman. During this time he saw action at Nashville, Louisville, and Chattanooga, Tennessee and
Atlanta, Georgia.
He received his discharge in Febuary 1865 and on May 25 of the same year he was married. He had
been ill and hospitlaized for nine months before being mustered out of the Army because of disability for future service. When he returned home he took up the cultivation of his farm which he
had left in care of his brother. He was a school teacher at one time as well as being a public spirited
man and did much for his community, during his long life as a resident there.
He was a strong advocate of Temperance and always was an ardent worker in the interest of that cause. His travel by way of the Praire Schooner [Covered Wagon] to the age of the Automobile and
the Flying Machine, this being a great thing in his lifetime.
He cared for his aged father and mother and helped administer to them in the closing years of their
lives. His father lived to the age of 92 years, and his mother lived 3 months past her 100th birthday.
