REV. Alba Gross (b. date unknown, d. date unknown)
Alba Gross was born date unknown in Unknown, and died date unknown in Unknown. He married Alatnea Smith on September 09, 1835 in Marathon, Courtland County, New York., daughter of William Smith II and Lorenda Badger.

Rev. Alba Gross, a Baptist Elder son of Freeman Gross who was born Feb 13 1817
Came over from England and settled on section 17. His father Freeman Gross Sr.
likewise a farmer, and a son of Jabez Gross, who sailed from England with General
Wolf for the United States annd who afterwards fought under that General at the Hights
of Abraham in the French and English war of 1765.
Jabez went through that Campaign and escaped both injury and imprisonment. It was
from Jabez and his brother Thomas that the Gross Family through-out the United States
descended. Thomas Gross in Genealogy of the Family was lost sight of and it is unknown
what became of him. Both Jabez and Thomas were born in Holland, and went to England,
just prior to coming to the United States. Jabez was married after arriving in this country,
to Dorothea Ellis, a lady of French Parentage.
For Several years after his marriage Jabez followed the sea as a Whaler, and later
settled at Cap Cod, Massachusetts, from which he went with his family to Otsego, County
New York, where he was engaged in farming and there he lived untill his death.
Of this marriage to Dorothea Ellis Gross, 12 children were born, of whom the father of
our subject was the youngest raised to the callings of both farmer and cooper, and married
in Ostego, County, New York. After his marriage he moved to Courtland County, New York,
and took up the Cooper trade for part of his life. He and his wife both died in Courtland,
County, New York, after the lived an honorable, active and sussessful life within its borders.
Freeman Gross is the 5th child, 3rd son of a family of 12 children, 8 sons and 4 daughters,
2 of the former and all of the latter being deceased. Rev. Alba Gross is living in Springfield,
Illinois at the time of this orgnal update, having retired from active of ministerial labor.
Altathea Smith Gross and Rev. Alba Gross came to Illinois in the year of 1844, with her
parents, William and Lorenda Badger Smith, briging 4 of there 6 children with them, the last
2 being born after they settled in Illinois.
Rev. Alba Gross was a Baptist Elder, and organized the Baptist Churches in Knoxville and
Galesburg, Illinois, going from his farm in Lynn Township to preach on Sundays. He also
preached for several years in Naperville, Canton as well as Galva, Illinois, before going to
Chatham, Illinois to make there home.
