William L. Gross (son of Alba Gross and Alatnea Smith) was born February 21, 1839 in Herkermer County, New York, and died date unknown in Springfield, Illinois.
Notes for William L. Gross:
Willam L. Gross was a Judge and Prominet Lawyer at Springfield, Illinois. He came
with his father to Illinois in 1844, was admitted to the Bar at Springfield, in 1862, and
immediately entered the Service of the Goverment, and a year later, was appointrd by
President Lincoln, a Captian and Assistant Quartermaster, and under command of General
Stager, was assigned to the Department of Ohio as Military Superintendent of Telegraphs.
At the close of the War, he was transfered to the Department of the Gulf, takeing control
of Military telegraphs in that Department with head-quarters in New Orleans, Louisana
remaining until Augest of 1866, being brevetted[promoted] Major and Lieutenant Colonel.
For the next 2 years he occupied various positions in the Telegraph service, but in 1867
he resumed his law practice in Springfield, Illinois.
In conjuction with his brother Eugene L. Gross they issued the first volume of "Gross
Statutes of Illinois", followed in later years by two additional volumes and the Index to the
laws of the State. In 1878 he was elected as a Republican to the to the General Assembly
from Sangamon County, and was approved by then Governer Hamilton, Circut Judge to
succeed Judge C>S> Zane,who had been appointed Chief Justice of the State of Utah.
Upon organization of the Illinois State Bar Assocation, Judge Gross became its first
Secretary, serving until 1883, when he was elected President of that Bar, and again serving
as Secretary and Treasure in 1893 and 1894.
