SMITHER (b. Abt. 1732, d. Abt. 1771)
SMITHER was born Abt. 1732, and died Abt. 1771.
Notes for SMITHER:
There is a Smither Archive in Silver Springs, MD.
The name was originally Smither, some say from Wales, some say Scotch/Irish. Smith generally meant blacksmith, Smither often meant silversmith. Records show that several "Smither" families entered Virginia about 1750. In the early years there were no Smothers, Smathers, Smeathers, etc.
His given name may have been William, because that was the name he gave his first son.
The children were 12, 9 and 7 when their parents died.
The name of William's wife is poorly documented, and has been challenged. Chrisman family records usually show Anna Maria didn't exist or married someone else.
"Ray Smather, Director of the Smithers Archives in Silver Springs, Maryland, states that the Smither families in America were descendants of the Smither settlers who came to America from Wales, and became prominent families of Virginia. He further states that only persons named Smither came to America in these early years of the 1700's and that all other citizens bearing variations of the spelling of the name were actually descendants of these early Smither settlers. The first four Smithers to come to America were John Smither, William Smither, George Smither, and Thomas Smither of Wales.
The Smither Coat of Arms was granted to William Smither I at the Siege of Jerusalem in 1191 A.D. The third and last grant was given to William Smither II for the last expedition in the recovery of Jerusalem in 1292 A.D. Sir William II, like his father, was a knight of great renown." "John Berry and His Children", Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 88-92428.
