Elizabeth Foster LINDSAY was born on 8 Mar 1838 in Burnbrae, Tarbolton, Ayr,

on 4 Jun 1864. She died on 22 Apr 1880. She was sealed to parents on 16 Sep
1965. Elizabeth is responsible for having the hymn "Nay speak no Ill"
in our
hymn book. The family tradition is that she knew the song in
Scotland. When she came to Utah she married Charles J. Thomas, then
the conductor for the Tabernacle Choir. She sang the song to him, and
he wrote it, and it was later published. "Our Latter-Day Hymns" by
Davidson states: "Elizabeth Foster Lindsay Thomas was a concert singer
in Scotland before she came to Utah. Besides being a soloist in the
Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir, she was the first president of the Mutual
Improvement Association. She was both composer and author of the
song." (I feel that she probably was known to have a beautiful voice,
but to be an concert singer is doubtful as they were poor coal miner.)
She and her husband, Charles Thomas, had no children.
