"When our ancestors came here this [Clarion County] was part of Venango
Co., and it was a vast wilderness. Earliest settlements were made in (1802-3-4.)
Clarion Co. was not organized until 1840. They were an honest, upright, God-fearing
optimistic people. Each one had a piece of wood; and cleared it, built log houses
with fireplaces outside (now we have them inside), log barns and the various
outhouses. I tell you it was labor to grub the second growth, chop the big trees,
roll and burn the big logs. I remember my Father telling me of Grandfather chopping
the logs into cord wood and burning it to make charcoal. In 1850 they sold it
to the Keating Furnace for one dollar a cord. At that time practically all farming
and hauling was done with oxen and the roads were just trails. All grain was
sowed by hand. The grain was cut with the sickle, and then some one invented
the grain-cradle, and that was a faster and better way to cut it. The old settlers
were a social set. They would assist each other in a pinch, and were neighborly.
If anybody would butcher a hog or a sheep, their neighbors got a portion of
the fresh meat, and all were happy. They had what they called folics, log-rollings,
corn husking parties, barn raisings, and for the lady of the house, there were
apple parings, quilting bees, barn dances and square dances. Instead of making
New Year's calls [as] 'my lady' now does, the men would go in companies from
house to house, commencing at ten to eleven o'clock P.M. and stand by the door
and fire a volley from their flintlock squirrel rifles - be invited in to apples
and cider, and so go through the neighborhood shooting the old year out and the
new year in." -- Whitling family tree.

Nancy A. Burns, who became the wife of Henry Myers, Jr., joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1823. Her parents did all they could to prevent her from

walking alone from her home on the Clarion, carrying her baby all the way, over
a slippery road in winter, ten miles to a quarterly meeting held by Dennis B.
Dorsey and J.M. Hudson at Armstrong School House. She reached the place by running
part of the way, just in time to hear Brother Dorsey announce for his text, "Alexander,
the Coppersmith, did me much harm." -- Taken from the history of the Erie
Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Volume No. 2, written by Rev. J.N.
