Patrick Dalton, one of the oldest settlers of this Parish, came to this country
from Ireland in 1848. He dug ore, which was the industry at that time. In 1851,
he bought the land now known as the Dalton farm. Since wells were unknown then,
he built a log house near a sprint of water and made a home there for his bride,
Sophia McLaughlin, who also came from Ireland. They met and exchanged vows m
this country. They cleared the land and burned the timber to have the use of
the land, raised sheep for the wool and meat, raised cattle, did their work with
oxen, made shingles, made soap from wood ashes and fat. They had a stone fireplace
for light, heat, cooking and baking. They made tallow candles for light. They
also carded, spun, knitted and wove the wool into clothing and blankets. When
the wood fire went out, they borrowed a shovel of live coals from one of their
neighbors, for matches were scarce, and could only be obtained at Fryburg, where
they did their trading. A priest was not here all the time then, and when one
arrived, all the neighbors were to send the word out in all directions, so everyone
